Bobby Ocean on KOIT

H

hitliner

Guest
Bobby was on Monday afternoon. Anyone know if this was his first time on air at KOIT?

It was..interesting.

> It's the first time that I'm aware of. I listened for about a half hour. That's about all the "Lite" rock I can take, and that half hour seemed "liter" than usual, music wise. He sounded like the same old Bobby Ocean (that's a good thing), only one that was anchored down by liner cards. I have to confess - I was hoping for a classic Ocean reading of their PSA slogan - "KOIT - A Bonneville station, working with (slight pause) yooooouuu to make a difference." But he read it straight. Actually, they do give the regular PM drive jock - Laurie Sanders - a generous amount of time to talk, so hopefully Bobby will have some room to move once he gets comfortable.

Is Bobby just weekends and fill?

I think Bobby's style is befitting KOIT-HD1. Don't be too harsh on the way he sounds over at KOIT, he's got the restraints of the Lite Rock format. I heard him and he still sounds good, if you'd never heard him before. For those that have heard him let loose on other formats, yes, it's a bit weird hearing him on Lite rock. Bonneville's lucky to have him.

> I don't think anyone in this thread has been "harsh" regarding Bobby. We all agree that he sounds great, and it's nice that he's back. I was gently needling the KOIT format and the incessant reading of image slogans the jocks have to endure. But it's hard to argue with success, which KOIT has defintiely been for many years. Having said that, I've listened to Laurie Saunders on occasion, and have noticed that Bonneville allows her a generous amount of time to talk - despite their "less talk" slogan. So I'm hoping that we'll have the opportunity to hear some of that quixotic Ocean humor once he settles in.

Yes - so far anyway. But I think he still has a successful VO business, and may not want to be on-air 5 days a week. After all, he could have decided to stay at KFRC in 2004 for less money.

Okay, this is just speculation, so please take it with several solid shakes of salt, then throw in a few more shakes just in case, but...

Bonneville just hired Bobby Ocean as a weekend/fill guy. They have also hired another guy, Rex MCNeill, for traffic and fill. Osh's forte is Oldies. Rex's forte is Oldies.

KOIT's HD-2 is Oldies right now -- "The Bay Area's Only Real Oldies Station" is what they're calling it. I'm wondering how big a leap it would be for Bonneville to switch out MAX (and maybe 1260 AM) to Oldies if MAX doesn't make a significant move soon?

Yeah, I know. Wishful thinking.

Sorry.

That would be a welcome move. Hope it happens...

I think KOIT should promote HD to the general public more. When I mention HD radio in my body shop, people give strange looks. Its much to eary.
