Bobby Vee retirement ??

Preliminary reports that Bobby Vee is contemplating retirement after a little over 50 years on the road........ he certainly has had a marvelous career, and we wish him good health and many many more years to enjoy his retirement. He is looking at around 7/3/2011 as possibly his last performance. His recent release "Rarities" is a great cd and a must for every Bobby Vee Fan, I love all his music, but some of my favorites are:

nite has 1,000 eyes
sharing you
walking with my angel
run to him

i saw him sometime around 10 years ago doing a concert.he was very good.

Got a chance to talk to him some years back after a show. Super-nice guy. Here's wishing him a long and happy retirement.

My personal faves?

"Thousand Eyes" (Probably now my favorite...although when it first came out I thought it was a dumb song).
"Please Don't Ask About Barbara" (Lovely....He's frequently told the now-amusing story of his theory why this one didn't do better.)
"More Than I Can Say" (Leo Sayer had the hit with a good version, but I thought BV's was clearly better)

All of these on my iPod along with "Walkin' with My Angel" (written by Carole King), "Rubber Ball", "Yesterday and You" "Sharing You" and "Stayin' In" (which had to be tongue in cheek).

Great voice, I concur with the above postings about Bobby Vee's music. There are lots of great hits there. Some of the lesser hits are wonderful and in my MP3 collection...
According to Joel Whitburn: Two #1 hits and then the rest...
#1's include Take Good Care Of My Angel Baby 8-7-61; Run to Him 11-13-61. #3's The Night Has A Thousand Eyes 12-08-62+; Come Back When You Grow Up 7-22-67. #6's Devil or Angel 8-01-60; Rubber Ball 11-28-60+. #13 Charms 3-30-63. #15's Please Don't Ask About Barbara 2-24-62; Sharing You 5-19-62. #33 Stayin' In 2-13-61;#63's How Many Tears 5-29-61; Hickory, Dic and Dock 5-30-64 .

Glad to see "Stayin In" and "Hickory, Dick and Doc" on your lists ,they are two great lesser known songs.

Hickory has those great female back-up vocals and of course the Bobby Vee overdubs.

One of his best b-sides and onother favorite is "Never Love a Robin" and also "Three On A Date"

great stuff from mr Velline. Bobby often talks about his brother Bill Velline, who was the leader of the Shadows when Bobby Joined the band in 1959..I've got two recordings by Bill Velline "Leave me Alone" and What'll I Do" attached is "What'll I Do"" on youtube check it out..the picture shows Bobby in the Middle and Bill is on the far right strong resemblance.

Thanks for the YouTube tip. While I was in there I discovered "Flyin' High" and "Lonely Love". Great raw garage band sound............... probably done when the group was still in high school.

I actually really like his remake of "Look At Me, Girl" from the 60's!

Don't forget "Rubber Ball" written by the equally great & very much missed Gene Pitney.

in concert Bobby Vee throws out autographed beach balls when he does Rubber Ball...

I interviewed Bobby several years back and he was a VERY good interview and a super nice guy. His story about how he came to play the concert in Fargo that started his career was quite something.

You're right--I had the chance to see him in concert in the 90s and he was very good.

Really amazing for him to be able to have a hit in 1967! So many from his generation were no longer able to have hits after the British invasion took over. And a few, like Neil Sedaka and Paul Anka, had to wait until the '70s to stage comebacks.

Bobby's Christmas song "A Not So Merry Christmas" is one of my very favorite Christmas classics. Doesn't get much airplay, especially nowadays.

Yeah it was kind of strange that Bobby had a dry spell in the mid 60s & then came back strong in 67 with "Come Back When You Grow Up" and "Beautiful People". Neil Sedaka rebounded in the mid 70s when he was on Elton John's record label.
