Fresno / Central Valley Bolt fire destroys KVPT transmitter

Bear Mountain has been hit pretty hard thanks to the wildfire. Off the air are Valley PBS TV, NWS 165.400 NWS radio, and KMAK 100.3 Orange-Cove Fresno. I believe thrre are some LPTV transmitters up there too. Cellular. In the region is also down.

Note to website manager - It's time s like these I wish the old Central California category were available.

Gary Cocola has LPTV up there, only ch 13 and a few others, he did have ch. 43 and other LPFM but he did what KSEE 24 did and moved them to Meadow Lakes, and also up there Fire, Police, and other county communications.

This is so sad. This is now twice in a few years where a few Fresno Visalia area broadcast facilities have been destroyed. This is early in the season and I’m afraid to think about what the rest of the year will look like.

IIRC one of the big fires a couple of years ago (Paradise?) the only building left in the path of the fire was a Dollar General. Most of the freestanding DGs I have seen are "all steel" affairs. I call them Butler buildings but now many companies make them now. I guess the metal roof stops the air born burning embers from starting the building on fire. All of the remote transmitter buildings I have been in had exhaust fans which could suck in the fire. Do you shut down everything before the fire gets there? Thankfully I have never been in a wildfire. With tornados and hurricanes there are some things you can do. A wildfire is super scary to me. You can't breath smoke and fire. The only thing I could think of is get my car and stuff out a couple of days early and hope there is something to come back too.

I guess if your transmitter site is in the path of a wildfire and loses power, the generator is disabled, or the site ends up burning to the ground, it would be pretty tough to make life safety notifications to the general public.
So goes disasters. You can't be sure that something out of left field might happen. More often that's exactly what happens.

KMAK has returned to the air as of today although the signal is weaker. Still operating from Bear Mountain?

Yesterday while up in the Sierras southeast of Fresnk 100.3 was a mix of KBRG and Lompoc's KRQK, both Spanish-language stations.

Still no NWS radio as well.
