Bombing the CC Fleet

It was a big night of "Battleship" by Milton Bradley, in the bunker last night.

If the entire Clear Channel fleet (the top 5 English language stations 12+) were my opponent in Battleship, and I wanted to sink their aircraft carrier with one bomb, I'd hire away Beth and Bill. I'd cause irrepairable damage to their battleship, by luring Barry Young to KTAR, and I'd blast a hole in their of their submarine by snatching up Steve Goddard.

I hear morale is at an all time low over at CC properties. I hope they're coddling their top tier talent (read: TOP PAID) , as that's what seems to be propelling the fleet these days.

Meanwhile, over at TimandWilly.com, over 1700 people responded to their online survey, and the boys themselves, are still making appearances all over the Valley.
At the time, seems like all the available opportunities are locked up, but the boys ain't letting that stop them.

Back at the bunker it's either a chaw full of Nicorette or an oxygen tank on wheels soon, as the air at the top of South Mountain has gotten quite thin.

Highly unlikely scenario, that would take a lot of cash, although bringing Barry to KTAR makes perfect sense. Bonneville is probably the only one who could afford to make this happen. Beth and Bill aren't going anywhere, although once the ratings start to slip, they'll find themselves as appreciated as Tim and Willy. Right now, Beth and Bill sell too many adlets. They are the reigning king and queen of CC and, as the ratings prove, they can do no wrong.

I don't see Barry Young putting up with Bonneville. He doesn't need their money. They wouldn't like his sense of humor or his take on politics.

Bonneville does not let religion get in the way of business. If his sense of humor and politics helps the bottom line, that's fine. Barry Young could take KTAR to the next level. KTAR is great at being live and local, but they really lack a certain entertainment factor that Barry brings to the table. One would think working for Bonneville would be preferable to working for Clear Channel these days, even if he didn't need the money.

Actually CC may be close to dumping a few more markets soon as CC has properties on the block across the midwest. It would not surprise me in the least to read about a truckload of dumpage from CC stations.

But on the other side of the coin, CC picked up 5 new signals last week.

But that's WHY they lack a certain entertainment factor, they're not going to allow anyone to make si se puede or gun or local yokel jokes like Barry does. His stuff is hilarious, but it's also a little too edgy for 620 amd.

Anyone not on Social Security around here? Canned laughter and ewwwwwww and ahhhhhhhhhs went out with Facts of Life.

The production elements add to his show. Raul on the cymbal is brilliant. That one cymbal sfx creates an entire visual image. A lot of the other stuff tends to lighten the mood and add an element of fun. Barry is brilliant in his comedic timing and the way he goes about presenting his arguments. He's talk radio's brightest local star.

From the Media Hut, our spin: CCU is doing a great job of self destructing all by themselves. Why waste precious time and dollars to hasten the inevitable? As far as the Nearly Bald One goes, Nurse Jeff and I wonder where they'd put him on KT'R. Having done a two hour show for years, TNBO may not be up to Aunt Carlos' three and a half hour marathon. Then how about replacing Glenn Beck with TNBO? Well how about crossing I-10 on foot in rush hour traffic? The smart programmer avoids 900lb gorillas if possible!

If Barry moves to KTAR, does that make him the nearly Mormon one?

Hey, I wonder if he is actually some how related to the great "Brother Brigham" Young. I'm sure the LDS Family history center could look into this. ;D

And by the way, I aint "TMISU" but I am a Mormon, with a sense of humor, too!! ;D

Barry knows that-he's putting you on.

Dr., (respectfully) speaking as one who's day job is educating those under the age of eight, if Barry can keep up with Ian, he can do a three hour radio program! I just don't see him wanting to.

Make that a 3 1/2 hour shift, if the Nearly Bald One were to take Aunt Carlos' place at KT'R. But the Nurse and I are with you...why would TNBO cross the street? He's got it pretty fat at KFWhyEye, and by 10:15am he's at his real job.

Here it comes...

CC has started closing on the sales of DC stations, to get down to some 175 signals to save the corporation.

Will CC dump it's Phoenix signals? and what is the speculation on who the buyer will be?

I don't think CC has the best set of signals in DC, though I could be wrong about that.

In any case, why would CC dump its Phoenix signals? KEZ and KFYI are usually in the Top Five or higher. KYOT is a license to print money with virtually no overhead. XTRA has small ratings but bills fairly well. KOY is probably a bit of a dog, but you're probably going to earn more money off that signal than you are selling it to another Spanish preacher-tape outfit. KNIX does well enough, at least better than KMLE. Mix fills a void and seems to cruise right along and KISS, is well, I don't know, not bad, but not great either.

Give me any one of those stations except for KOY and XTRA and I could have a lot of fun making them sound better (IMHO), but they all make pretty good money.

The only thing that would make sense to me is for CC to flip one of their FMs to Spanish programming and really cut the legs out from under one of the other stations - none of which is a full-power FM. But selling any of their FM signals is just giving a competitor a club to hit you with.

Don't see it happening, but hey, radio is nothing if not illogical.
