Bongino

Last I looked, the Salem station doesn't even appear in the ratings in Tampa.
They don't buy the book in most places.

As I see it, Rush's popularity gradually ramped up into and through the 1990s and, because his show dominated the time slot, many listeners developed a Rush habit that continued into the 2000s while his uniqueness and sense of humor gradually declined.
You just defined the process of radicalization which is Rush's legacy in America.

I guess I'm not sure what Salem's business model is. Loss leaders to get website clicks?
Pushing an ideology. It was always the case even when they started rolling out the turnkey talk format c. 2004.

That’s why they tossed Michael Medved aside for Sebastian Gorka and keep pushing the likes of Charlie Kirk and Stephan Crowder (the “change my mind” meme guy). Joe Walsh served a similar purpose until he completely broke from the ideology once the Republicans embraced Trump; once he made his quixotic run for President, Salem tossed him aside for good.

I’d be completely and utterly shocked if Salem’s acquired digital assets, which were launched by Michelle Malkin (HotAir, Twitchy), Eric Erickson (RedState) and National Review (Townhall) didn’t turn a profit. Those narrowcast and don’t need the expense an AM transmitter needs.

Then there's the Christian talk/teaching format, heavy on "Jesus is a white Republican who hates gays"

Salem's talk stations are truly bottom tier. More like bottom of the barrel.

All sorts of stations place higher than Salem's boring Angry White Men Talk Radio station, like salsa, etc.
Nobody, and I mean nobody, pays much attention to the station.

They really liked me telling them that on their station FB page. They liked it so much they banned me from their page.
I was not reticent at all to express my disdain for their boring, one-sided programming appealing only to a small section of the population.
In the Tampa Bay Area, Salem controls 4 fairly good AM frequencies: 570,860, 910, and 930……not to mention a few prime translators, so that everyone on the radical right can re-enforce their views and not have to stream. (I imaging some of these listeners would not listen on a stream, for fear of getting radiation or some sound waves that would invade their body!)…..I would have been surprised if the Salem gang had not banned you; they only want to hear “yes men” or ”yes women”

Great follow-up story on the Dan Bongino threat to quit over covid rules:

Like so many of his kind, he's all talk and no action.
I didn't bother clicking the button to read more, but first, how many times did Rush Limbaugh threaten to leave the country, or threaten to quit, or say he was done with it all, it was getting to be too much, it was about time to say he was outta here, etc. and he never once actually moved from his EIB throne. He was a blowhard just like the others, including Bongino. For better or worse, many in their audience get whipped into a frenzy by that kind of talk, and they never bother to sit down and count the number of times people like Rush and Bongino have made predictions or "major announcements" that never came to fruition, promises they never followed up on, "mark my words" type statements that never played out, or threats they made and then slithered away from.

One big difference between Rush and Bongino, of course, is that Rush had a massive listening audience and a huge following. Had he actually pushed hard enough or actually followed through on one of his empty threads, he may have actually gotten action. Bongino simply doesn't have nearly that kind of clout.

I don't remember any threats to quit from Limbaugh (other than the Costa Rica comment). Bongino seems to think the fact he's in the Limbaugh slot on maybe 1/.3 of his affiliates, he has the same clout as Limbaugh. Not even close. When Rush came along, he was unique, now any Fox News personality would be interchangeable in the noon-3 slot

I remember at least a few from Limbaugh back when I still listened to him on occasion. They were usually said during the course of a particular show, not high profile or forceful enough or evidently taken serious enough to land him in the news, but he'd make comments like those here and there - Along with the aforementioned "mark my words" predictions that never actually happened or the "something big is coming" promises that ended up being nothing at all in most cases. And yet his core audience still bit every time and hung on his every word without stopping to realize how many times they'd been fed BS or misled.

I can't believe Cumulus wouldn't have yanked Bongino off the air immediately if they weren't in on the publicity plan. But I agree, it's now history.
