Bookshelf HD systems other than the Insignia?

I currently have a 1992 vintage Magnavox AS9506 bookshelf system whose digital display has gone out for the second time. (I had it repaired when the same problem occurred back around '94.) I'm looking for a bookshelf type all-in-one system with HD. I've longed for the small Insignia NS-HD2114 for a while especially as it also plays DVDs, but wonder if there is anything a little bit bigger with HD out there or coming in time for the Holidays?

Have you considered an all-in-one unit such as the Polk, or for a much lower cost the Cambridge Soundworks or Sony? You might find the sound quality as good, or even better than a shelf system (though certainly not as good as a component system with good speakers).

I might consider a component system as I have a separate dual cassette deck and the Magnavox has a separate CD player that still works fine, but I love the DVD feature on the Insignia, of which I note that there is a new and apparent successor model (NS-HD3113). I'm in an apartment, so I won't/can't put up big speakers. The ones I have now in fact are scavenged from an ancient (like mid-70s vintage) shelf system. They just happened to fit perfectly in the space I had available. I'm wondering if I could put RCA plugs on the cables and continue using them with the Insignia?

Sure you could (put RCA plugs on the cables). But there are lots of truly excellent small bookshelf systems, at surprisingly affordable prices, that can run rings around any old speakers. The surrounds on older woofers eventually deteriorate, or "dry-rot", changing the tuning of the woofer, and drastically altering sound. Whatever you do, budget for decent bookshelf speakers!
