Boomerang

Recently my local cable system added Boomerang. I was looking forward to watching it to see all the classic cartoons. Man, was I let down. Dexter's Labortory is not a classic cartoon. It is a crummy hand me down from the Cartoon Network. Where are the Warner Brother cartoons? Where are the MGM (Droopy ect) cartoons? From what I can tell they are not even showing Yogi Bear and Quick Draw Magraw! Yeah, they show Tom & Jerry but I am not interested in them. Itchy & Scratchy are much funnier and have a lot more creativity.
Now I have to add, I only like funny cartoons. Cartoons that make me laugh. When I was a kid I just hated Johnny Quest but loved Bullwinkle. So any cartoon without humor I wouldn't be intersted in anyway.

You missed out on Boomerang's best years. It had been nonstop Yogi, Huck, Looney Tunes, Scooby Doo, Etc. Now, like everything else in TV and radio, They're slowly starting to move it foreward out of the Baby-Boomer era (Dexter, Justice League, probably some of those "Anime" shows soon.) It just isn't the same, or won't be soon. They're doing marathons-by-character this week, but running (in my opinion) mostly "B" material like Richie-Rich and the like. I hope they keep classic Hannah-Barbera and Warner-Bros. 'toons for awhile longer. I do like some of the recent stuff from CN, but some of them need to rest awhile, or at least don't over-play them yet.

The thing is, the kids now days, love the classic Bugs Bunny etc. as much as we did. They will watch it and from personal experience they sit thru them longer than Dexter's Lab, Powder Puff Girls etc. I guess the classic animation is more attractive to them, not to mention that they are actually
"FUNNY". They make them laugh.

Boomerang has definitely gone downhill in the past year, especially since Looney Tunes were dropped. Is it true that CN / Boomerang's rights to run post-1948 Looney Tunes has expired, and that is why they are no longer shown? Even with that, why aren't the pre-48 cartoons shown if they still have the rights to them other than for filler? At leaast they still have Tom & Jerry.

The idea that today's kids don't like older cartoons is baloney. A few years back my nieces who were 13 and 16 at the time were talking about how they didn't like that Looney Tunes were dropped off of CN at that time. And my 3 year old daughter LOVES Tom & Jerry! ;D

How could they expire? Time Warner owns much of the Looney Tunes / Merrie Melodies library -- along with CN and Boomerang. Can't lose what you already own.

Yes, its true.

That's what I thought but according to the Toon Zone forum, WB, the parent company, was making CN / Boomerang PAY to run the post-1948 Looney Tunes. So they own the pre-1948 Looney Tunes (Before Turner/Time Warner merger) but not the post-1948 Looney Tunes.

Oh well, at least there are the Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVDs.

I did watch it during some of its best years when I had digital cable and when the cable company showed and still shows it on a rotating basis when they show different channels (G4, etc) every week as a preview on basic cable.

WNEW-TV and WWOR-TV Used to Run the Looney Tunes

So Looney Tunes are not being shown ANYWHERE now?? That's a travesty.

I remember years ago when WNEW-TV (channel 5) and WWOR-TV (channel 9), the two stations ran the pre-48 Looney Tunes for a long time as well as a number of post-48 cartoons that are on both TV stations in my area. I missed the good old days of watching Looney Tunes on both WNEW and WWOR when it was part of the NYC stable for decades. :(

I don't get Boomerang on my cable channel. :(

WPIX-TV Used to Run Classic Tom & Jerry Cartoons

Don't give up the ship, Boomerang still has Tom & Jerry on. I remember back when I was a kid when WPIX-TV (channel 11) in New York City used to run the old Tom & Jerry cartoons as well as the Tex Avery cartoons like "Droopy". That was one of the best cartoons ever as part of the WPIX's stable for almost 30 years when it was part of "11 Alive". I missed that show. I found this intro from YouTube and here it is. That brings back memories.

The Cartoon Network, being on basic cable, is refocusing on current trends (Anime, Anime, and more Anime). The network is only part-time now (technically), sharing with Adult Swim, which is a ratings hit (Family Guy often beats Comedy Central's Jon Stewart, as well as local newscasts in many places).

Cartoon Network basically pawned the good stuff onto Boomerang (a digital specialty service), which does not have to deal with the same pressures of basic cable. Beause cable providers are starting shifting less-viewed channels to digital (more bandwidith), channels that want to stay on basic cable have to perform. Basic cable space is limited (space for 70-80 channels), whereas digital space is not as limited (space for 500 Channels+). This is why Headline News and The Weather Channel have done what they have done in the past few years.

I think this is a crying shame. Cartoon Network was started on the principle of airing the Hanna-Barbera animation library Turner owned (pre-Time Warner).

Unless there is a fad involving classic cartoons, don't expect Cartoon Network to restore classic cartoons. Expect them to follow trends. (Today it may be Anime, tomorrow it may be stick figure drawings.)

As I mentioned above I don't like Tom & Jerry. Never did even when I was kid. Too much senseless violence even for a cartoon. Besides, I was always for the cat! But I do like the other MGM cartoons - Droopy, Barney Bear, etc but Boomerang is not showing them either.

I miss all of the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoons on TV with Bugs Bunny,Daffy Duck,Yosemite Sam,Elmer Fudd,Sylvester and Tweety,Porky Pig,Wile E Coyote and Road Runner

The last time regular TV had them was when it was called "Merrie Melodies" in syndication and of course "Bugs Bunny and Tweety" on Saturday mornings on ABC back in the mid 90's.

I found a bunch of Warner Brothers VHS tapes at Goodwill of all of the classic Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoons like "Long Haired Hare" where Bugs aggrevates the opera singer by first playing the banjo, then playing the harp, and then playing the tuba and then at the concert Bugs gets his revenge by being the conductor of the orchestra and the opera singer holding a note for the longest time.

So I miss all of them on TV and also The Flintstones on TV as well.

I never liked Tom and Jerry, either. For one thing, they never talked, and for another, they just weren't funny!
I don't know why their cartoons are still so prominently featured on CN, when the Warner Bros and HB classics are now deemed 'old fashioned'. ???

CN/Boomerang actually owns Tom & Jerry, along with most classic H-B shows, so that plays a big factor in why they're still shown. However, they also own the pre-1948 LTs and classic MGM cartoons, so why aren't they still being shown except for occasional filler on Boomerang?

Regarding pre- as opposed to post-1948 Warners toons... I imagine there must be something contractual about that. (And I don't mean contractual as in "shrinking". :D). Was that 1948 date arbitrary or is there some significance in that year?

Here's a link that explains how the division of WB cartoons came about:

http://looney.goldenagecartoons.com/miscelooneyous/tvtitles/tvtitles2.html

AAP, which originally had the rights to the pre-1948 WB and also Popeye cartoons, was eventually bought by United Artists, them MGM, Ted Turner, and finally back to Time Warner. The pre-1948 LTs are still actually owned by the Turner Broadcasting division of Time Warner (Which also owns CN/Boomerang), so they can do what they want with them, which is currently almost nothing. However the post-1948 catroons are still owned by Warner Bros., which is why CN had to pay for the rights to show them.

Like I said before, I understand why CN isn't showing the post-1948 LTs, but just sitting on the pre-1948 LTs and doing nothing with them makes no sense at all. ???

I agree wholeheardtedly.. Cartoon Network in itself has unofficially become "Anime" Network and have dumped Dexter,Powepuff,Ed Edd & Eddy etc on its adjacent channel. If you want Quick Draw,Huck Hound and the others you have to get it from an on-demand channel if you have digital cable from guess who...their owners!
Good 'ol TW.

I can't stand the Cartoon Network - when it first came out I would see some of it. Our cable system Comcast has added Boomerang but only under On Demand Channel 1 - and this month they have Smurfs, Flintstones, Tom and Jerry.

A few problems with the old cartoons is many aren't politically correct and it's too much bother to sensor them. For instance I never realized how politically incorrect the Little Rascals are until WWME-CA started airing them. For instance today Stimie is going to bake a cake. Dickie says "You can bake a cake." Stymie says "sure my pop learned how when he was in the county jail." Or Spanky is complaining about having to take a bath and Buckwheat comes over and Spanky looks at him ands says "Boy are you lucky."

I do believe there is a market for the old stuff. For instance when I worked overnights I used to listen to classic radio on WBBM AM 780. And the entire staff got addicted to the radio comedies and detective shows from the 30s and 40s. And they were young in their 20s. So the market is there.

But I am thinking the old stuff is being marketed to be sold on DVD or mp3
