Booms countdown clock - place your bets on implosion date!

Great idea for a thread, but you need to include your reasoning as to WHY. I'll lay odds on the following:

10 to 1: drinking/drunk live on the air
5 to 1: all-night cocaine binges (makes the 6a to 10a shift a little rough)
3 to 1: off-air legal issues (more on these later)
Pick 'em: Kiley remembers why he couldn't share a studio with him in the first place (then again, it's been a while since KK has had any regular work after KESN yanked The Michael Irvin Show off the air, so who knows)

Kiley actually didn't share a studio with Booms for a long time on their original FSR show.

As the story goes, Booms came back to Cleveland (in suburban Euclid, his home) and did the last run of the show from CC's local facilities...I've heard both Oak Tree (Cleveland) or Freedom Avenue (Akron/Canton).

On the way out in Miami, Kiley reportedly told his now-former station that he was "moving back home to Virginia" (source: Miami Herald article). That leads me to wonder if he'll even be in Cleveland, aside from perhaps the first week or two. He could easily recreate the end of FSR's "Kiley and Booms" - at a DC area studio (CBS could put him in a production studio at DC's own "Fan", WJFK/106.7), with Booms at the Halle Building.

Not saying why, but my bet is before January.

Hmmm... This wouldn't be the first radio host to do a show for an Ohio radio station from facilities in Virginia... There's Brian Wilson - not to be confused with the surreal closer for the San Francisco Giants, or the Fox News guy - who does his show for Clear Channel's WSPD in Toledo all the way from Lynchburg, VA. The reason for the move, reportedly, is that Wilson was having a bad reaction to the pollen in the air in Toledo. Looks like there will be a different scenario involving Cleveland, as well as a different variety of air (hot).

funny thread.....sad but true......

I'm amazed no one did their due diligence.

After the station signs on and after Booms implodes, my guess is CBS will make a run at some of the KNR talent. I could see Brinda being a desired talent. They could be talking now. They're going to need some Cleveland natives on that air staff. Guys that know the sports history. This will be interesting. Along this line, who is on the CBS TV afilliate here that might want some radio work?

Mark Schwab was WTAM's Indians beat reporter/"Sportsline" fill-in host for nearly a decade before joining Action 19. Presumably he left WTAM because he couldn't handle both jobs.

If they even thought of looking at KNR talent, Brinda might be the only one worth approaching. Maybe even Munch, I guess. But there's nothing to suggest that they are even going the retread route. And thank God for that.

Given that he was most successful with Kiley before, I'll give it two-three years. Heck, people in this market will be far more likely warm up to Kiley more than Booms (like Brinda, Kiley has a good amount of sports talk "cred").

The ultimate joke is if Booms DOESN'T implode. For once. Or desert the station like he deserted "Jam'n 92" to work on "Comics on Delivery." (Yes, Booms was once at the same exact time slot, for the same station, 15 years ago!) :D

Sorta. He's never been on the radio in Cleveland full time longer than a month. It's been a few years since he's been on.

great track record ;D

and still a funny thread !

Dude's 3 weeks away from even returning, and already we have the "death pool" going.

Very Negative Ned-ian.

You obviously don't know much of the man. Those who do would consider this comment to be one of the more favorable of the lot.

My point exactly, and yet, he still couldn't stand the man. To wit:

A quick post from an old K&B fan forum (note that during the first K&B run, Booms unaffectionately referred to his co-host as "Dad")
http://www.voy.com/123500/635.html

someone named "tony" just called into dkla and asked dad, "where's chuck booms?" dad responded: "chuck booms is in cleveland. if you see him standing on the corner, give him some change."

Because radio people are among the most jealous, hateful people you're likely to meet. Just the way it is.

Hardly. To characterize an entire industry as such is ludicrous. Sure, there's bad apples in every barrel, but the statement above is off base, untrue and laughable.

In no way am I trying to paint everybody on this board with a broad brush or attack anyone.

My whole point was I just found it astonishing that Mr. Booms is already on death watch when his show is 3 weeks away from debuting.

Give him a chance.

He might realize that this could be his last shot at a prime radio gig, and he'll mind his Ps and Qs.

Now if he flops, than it's on him, and he's the one who has to take the lumps.

But don't start digging the grave before the show is even "born".

This is different than going after say Aaron Goldhammer. Hammer has proven himself to be a complete self serving, condescending little twit who on a daily basis basically says "Nah-Nah-Boo-Boo! My daddy owns the company, so I can say and do whatever I want and you can't stop me! Nah-Nah!"

AG is fair game because he's still on the air and still doing his crap.

Chuck Booms is 3 weeks away from putting his headphones on, so the fair thing is to see if he can sink or swim.

Once he gets on the air awhile, than he's fair game for a death pool depending on how the show is going.

Hold off until he gets rolling...that's all.

I'll defend X-Nooz on this talking point. Radio people really are "among the most jealous, hateful people you're likely to meet." I'll say that the few who aren't are the bottom feeders who won't ever add up to anything still don't give a damn about it, and the one or two 'stars' who really are genuinely good people and don't have to scratch and claw for every last dollar or second of air time.

This is a zero sum industry with increasingly poor prospects here in NEO. If you want to play the game, you better be prepared to deal from the bottom of the deck, because those around you already are.

Just the way it is.

I got confirmation that Kevin Kiley is actually moving to Cleveland full-time. No ISDN from CBS' Washington studios. He will do the show along with Booms in the Halle Building.

Wow! Breaking news! Two guys doing a radio show in the same room! ;D

It takes the "Kiley will only be doing his end of the show from Virginia/DC to be away from Booms" argument to the woodshed, and gives it a good ol' fashioned butt-kickin'.

Plus, Cleveland is closer to Virginia than Miami is. :p

Good catch, Nathan!

I had supposed that his presence would be in VA/DC only because he told the Miami paper that he was leaving because he was moving back there for personal reasons...and I presume the 92.3 gig was in the works when he left.

So, you're taking me to the woodshed, if you will. :D Or I took Kevin Kiley at his word when he talked to the paper and/or his Miami station, or the 92.3 gig was not being set up when he left Miami (though I doubt that, K&B were rumored here long before he left).

OK, I found the Miami Herald article:

http://www.miamiherald.com/2011/07/24/2329376/kiley-leaves-wqam.html

Kevin Kiley has left his job as co-host of Michael Irvin's noon to 3 p.m. talk show on WQAM-560, effective immediately, after deciding to move from Dallas to Virginia for personal reasons.

Oddly enough, the GM down there said "it would be hard to do a radio show with one guy in Dallas and one in Virginia", which is exactly what K&B did (Virginia/Cleveland) in their final run at FSR.

The article was posted on July 24th, long after K&B were rumored to be coming to Cleveland.
