Boortz Frowning Upon Syndication?

In an interview with Radio Ink, Neal Boortz says, "Syndication is really destroying the supply of good local talk show hosts... While it's been marvelously lucrative for the few hosts that manage to really get into it, it has really smothered the development of local talk radio talent."

Can you say... biting the hand that feeds you?

.....and politics aside, that is why I like Boortz. Yes, the hand that feeds him but he still want hold back from speaking the truth with regards to local radio talent. Once your syndicated, you no longer a hometown talk radio host. My favorite portion of the Boortz show is the first hour when he really focuses more on Atlanta vs national politics. I saw where Erick Erickson Show was the number one listened to show at 6 p.m. I don't think this is because he (Erick) is conservative but he does tend to focus a lot on Georgia politics as he is not syndicated.

Last week Erick Erickson spent thirty minutes on his show talking about the change of the brownie type at his local Chick-fil-a. I do not care about politics 24/7. I appreciate a local host who sometimes talks about something other than red and blue. Like the brownie... both red and blue can agree the new brownie tastes better but is not as good in texture. :)

@ACheron: "He is not syndicated" ... yet. With E-squared's background at the website that describes itself as a "leading conservative news blog" (RedState), it'll be a matter of time before he could be heard in several red states by way of terrestrial radio... And if it's true that he owns his timeslot on WSB, then that just buoys my argument. Two words: Sean Hannity (WABC New York, pre-syndication).

Erick has potential and shows it particularly when he takes off on a tangent that seems interesting to him regardless of whether the audience is calling in a calling him a hero or a traitor. Getting both means you are doing your job. This is good.

It echoes Boortz' old line about there's no point in having callers who agree 100% because he's paid to be there and the callers are not. 100% agreement is boring and dull and flat like a bowl of cold oatmeal. Exciting and interesting radio comes out of daring to reject oatmeal. Will Erick be able to keep it up? Will he give up thinking outside the box and just go for schtick like so many other talkers? Jury is still out.
