Boortz out Savage in

KGIL-AM 1260/540 has begun running promos announcing that Michael Savage will begin next Monday at 7am. Saul Levine has turned his wheel of format into a wheel of talk show hosts. I though that once KRLA had the presence of mind to dump Savage that we were rid of him. Then he got a reprieve briefly on KLAA which doesn't come in all that well here in North Hollywood. He's like the monster in a bad horror movie, he just won't go away and can't seem to be killed, just like Jason.

I have become a reluctant convert to Boortz finding him mostly interesting, especially his advocacy for the "Fair Tax". I just question the wisdom of this move. I would think given the tone of the station and the fact that their anchor program is Michael Jackson that a wiser replacement if Boortz wasn't working for them would have been Glenn Beck. Having Savage lead into Jackson would be like having Howard Stern right before Mr. Rogers, talk about culture shock.

I totally agree with you... Geeez The Savage Nation just won't lose! Glenn Beck deserved better than to be uncerimoniously dumped by KLAA and replaced by the Sports Lodge. I'm sure the ratings are climbing now ;D ;D ;D that KLAA is becoming more sports-centric ... Yeh right. Beck is a wild man (in a good way) and his humor would nicely complement Michael Jackson's tone.

I'm not defending the decision particularly, but recently I was told by someone who knows about these things that Savage was the #2 talk show in the country now, right behind Rush Limbaugh. Maybe that's why he thinks it might work.

You'd think they'd dump the borefest that is Lars Larson and actually air Savage live. Hey, it ain't working anywhere else.

I thought 830 still had Savage (and I was almost sure they still had Doyle), so why would TRN want to leave a 50kW live clearance to go on a higher dial tea kettle? I can't imagine they're simulcasting Savage on 540, because KFMB would certainly have cause for complaint. Also, I did hear from someone at KGIL that Beck was being sought after. Premiere is a pain to deal with and as much as I love Beck's show and think he is a nice guy, it's kind of funny how they wouldn't put Beck on any other stations anywhere in the LA TSA for fear of ticking off 830, and now they get blown out for a failed pretty boy sports yakker that won't get numbers or make any money for them.

Savage is #3 behind Hannity. Beck is #3 in A25-54 share behind Rush and Hannity, who I believe have a lower percentage of money demo listeners, but have double the total listeners, so it's kind of a default win. It would be nice to see Beck and perhaps Savage on 1260, although I have a feeling we're headed closer and closer to an all-traffic all-the-time format on KGIL, seeing that other than John Ziegler's sponsored commentary, they can't be making any money. Oh yeah, Saul doesn't need to make money. Hmm.

In any event it will be a day old when it airs. Boortz is live and if they had gone with Beck he would also be live. Maybe putting Savage in the evening instead of Larry King and Alan Colmes, when it is still fresh.

Larson isn't all that boring and he definitely fits the tone that is the rest of the station. Michael Savage will stick out like a sore thumb. But later after most talk listeners have switched to TV or their computers would have less of a jarring impact. The Savage fans won't listen to the rest of their day anyway. The only worse fit for him would be KTLK. Maybe Beck wants too much money, but he would be perfect for what KGIL is trying to build.

Too bad KFI couldn't have snagged Savage to follow John and Ken, now there is a seque! An additional plus, it would get rid of the Kennedy and Suits train wreck.

Thank God KFI wants to keep more than two local shows. Michael Savage has never been much more than a rumor in LA, so perhaps him not being on wouldn't kill anybody... or very many people. As to Beck, I don't believe Premiere has gone the Rush/Hannity route with cash in addition to spots, and I certainly think that they could waive any newfound cash requirement to get the LA clear back, seeing that Beck isn't on in the top 3 markets and he really needs to be.

If the want to be a legitimate player, KGIL needs to get more local content, and get rid of those BORING and OLD overnights playing music for the 85-dead demographic. They might as well go off the air from Mid-5am instead of playing that...who is listening???

Maybe they're just angling to put Savage on live later on. They'd have to sign him and hold him in reserve in order to make that decision later and this may be the way to do it.

I like the music, I often put it on softly to help drown out the neighborhood noise so I can sleep. Its less irratating than those rain machines. However KGIL reduces power at night limiting their directionally challenged signal even more. I think 540 also reduces power so in essence they are kind of off the air at nights. You can verify their coverage at-- http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/page?p=maps. 540 is XESURF.

I think that they were trying some possibilities with John Ziegler and various female cohosts so maybe that is also in the works. KGIL is supposed to be the Flagship station for Dr. Drew live though it is done at Westwood One studios.

There is not a lot of local talk from LA. KFI has the most but not all are that good. KRLA has Prager and Hewitt. KABC does McIntyre Al Rantel and Larry Elder. Stephanie Miller is local but really more for the syndicated market. So who else would you get with what is already on? To my mind relevant and interesting is better than local just for local's sake.

Savage is amazing. He's funny, intelligent....and I get such a kick out of him. I hope KGIL eventually puts him on in afternoon drive...live. Sorry if I offend anyone, but, his entertainment value is off the charts. Geeez, the guy has a PHD....he's bright, he's interesting, he's an author of best selling books...he's a great talent. HAT'S OFF to the Savage Nation (I don't agree with everything he has to say, but he's so damned enthralling to listen to.....)

Having a PHD means not a lot, so did the late Dr. Gene Scott who was also amazingly funny and often entertaining. ;D

My point is that given the tone of the rest of what is on KGIL Michael Savage is completely out of place. If Boortz was not making it for them then Beck is a better fit. Michael Savage would be a prefect fit to follow John and Ken on KFI and he is just as much a phony as they. People, at least speaking for myself, who listen to talk radio to gain a sense of what is going on want current content, not retreads from the previous day.

I am not opposed to being entertained, I like Handel and Stephanie Miller a lot. I have even slipped onto Adam Carolla on KLSX now and again. I just find Savage a bit to racist and he goes over the top too much for me. I don't like Rush too much either but I don't find him as objectionable and he is witty at times as well.

Correction: Savage is toast for a sports show, and Jerry Doyle is toast to accomodate for the paid programming moved for The Sports Lodge and the other paid programming following it. I guess you'll have to tune to KMET or KIXW for your fix of Doyle. ;)
