Boortz returns to Pittsburgh

During the 11am hour of his show, he said that KDKA will start carrying him as of Jan 2nd. As far as what time, etc he didn't say.

News hour at 5pm going to two hours.

Wow, that's almost like..."90 to 6," which the suits said wasn't hip enough for the 21st Century.

Here's an idea--how about firing the idiot suits and re-hiring the staff who knew how to run the ship.

Good Lord.

Bingo.

Apparently KDKA's management is realizing that the best way to succeed...is to replicate Salem's news/talk model.

You know, be cheap, deaf, and out-of-touch.

At least maybe now they're realizing that they shouldn't have gotten rid of the station's signature news & service element "90 to 6". That's IF they even realize it. They probably think it's some great, new, never before done scheme they just dreamed up and are dislocating their shoulders patting themseleves on the back.

UPDATE:

Keith Clark has confirmed to All Access that Jan. 2, Neil Boortz (delayed) replaces John McIntire 7-10pm on KDKA.

McIntire's last show is Dec. 29. He and the station are still negotiating new opportunities at 1020.

The news block will run 5-7pm.

Gene Collier is out; Jeff Hathhorn is solely sports director and will do more sports reporting as part of the news division.

And, a new face in KDKA news department as Paul Rasmussen was hired from Jacksonville's WQIK (and formerly news/talk WOKV).

[I still think they'd be better off starting the news block at 4.00 or 4.30 and going to 6.00, but I guess the thinking is that rush hour lasts well past 6pm now.]

Neal Boortz was missed when dropped from 104.7 in favor of Rush. Bummer he couldn't be carried live but its nice to have him back locally.

Actually, Boortz landed at WPTT and they did a lot of promotion about it.

Unfortunately, all the Cullen listeners objected and so they got rid of him quickly.

It's amazing how much pressure 27 people can put on a radio station (even more, if you count the salesladies at Muggins).

WPTT didn't do the promotion for Boortz, Boortz did it out of spite after getting dumped by 104.7, even though he was putting up better numbers than Limbaugh. During one of his last shows on 104.7, he even went on a rant on air about getting dumped and where he was going to.

He was let go when the station wanted to be more left leaning, and after using Thom Hartman briefly in Michael Reagan's old slot, they opted to carry Hartmann live rather than on delay.

As for the 23 people Realist, maybe you might want to actually look at the last book before saying something moronic like that. In some of the more valuable demos for stations (i.e. women 35-64) Cullen actually beat KDKA in that time slot. Not saying Cullen's programming suddenly got better, but an indicator of just how bad things have gotten at the blowtorch.

Looks like someone was playing hooky from school the day they taught the lesson about exaggerating to make a point. Either that, or he had his sense of humor surgically removed.

Look, I'd make the Limbaugh for Boortz trade any day of the week. I think the ratings success 104.7 enjoyed with Boortz was simply that they were fresh and new when he was on and an indication of people wanting to get away from KDKA.

Limbaugh's departure from KDKA might have been that station's biggest blow.

True, WPTT went left. But don't debate that there was a lot of negative feedback from the Cullen listeners that was a major factor in the switch.

I'm not a big Neal Boortz guy. As far as the right wing hosts go, he's not as engaging as Limbaugh, Hannity or even O'Reilly and is one of talk radio's biggest whiners.

However, I can't deny he has one of the top syndicated talk shows in the nation.

If I'm WPTT and I have a nationwide all-star like that willing to do his own promotion, there's no way on earth I get rid of him after a few months so I can put on Tom Hartmann.

It's the talk radio equivilent of trading Steve Carlton for Rick Wise.

I'm quite sure the reason Boortz left WPTT is that Tony "Jerry Jones" Renda decided it didn't fit HIS station. Judging by how *great* WPTT does, I'd say it's time for the owner to get off the field and let the players and coaches try to do something worthwhile.

I do not work inradio but enjoy talk radio but not really a rush fan anymore. why didn't Kdka pick up Boortz to go up against Rush if Boortz had good numbers against rush

I have no doubt that some people called WPTT and asked Boortz be removed, but I wouldn't say that was the only, or even primary reason the show was let go. If that were the case, then Laura Ingraham wouln't have lasted either. The station wanted to go more left and saw the opportunity to carry Hartmann live as opposed to on delay and WPTT was able to work out a deal with Boortz's syndicator where they could get out of the contract by switching programs, which gave you Clark Howard on WPTT instead. Not saying it was a right or wrong move, just the nuts and bolts behind it. Had WPTT been making money on Boortz or had there been a spike in his numbers, maybe he would have stuck around. Instead the numbers were pretty much the same as always, so WPTT got a couple of free billboards for a couple of months then moved on.

As for me and my sense of humor, I have one and get the idea of exaggerating to make a point, the problem was the post didn't make a point. It was just a sad attempt to belittle something you don't like Realist, much like many of your posts in here are. I just called you on it.

Beacuse CBS corporate forced KDKA to take O'Reilly's Radio Factor.

It was just a sad attempt to belittle something you don't like Realist,

So, you're calling Lynn Cullen a "thing"? I was belittling someone whose work I no longer like, because she has gone way past her sell-by date. I was belittling Lynn Cullen (albeit humorously) because she has gotten cranky, slow-speaking, and boring. She didn't used to sound like a distaff parody of a cranky old curmudgeon. Now she does. I am not alone in disliking what Ms. Cullen's on-air presentation has become.

No, I would call the radio show a thing. I recognize the difference between a "show" and a "person". What the listening public gets is a show, therefore a thing. I have deaalt with plenty of people in radio, that when talking to them on a one to one basis, are quite personable (Mark Madden for instance, at least in my dealings with him) but recognize that behind the microphone, you are getting a show, something that may or may not entertain depending on the listeners' tastes. But if semantics are the best that can be done to refute my argument, then I surely stand by it, you weren't making a point at all, just slamming something that you don't like which from you is par for the course.
