Booster Stations in Houston for BMT Stations?

M

The FCC had already given the areas affected by Rita many special amendments to the rules concerning STA's, daytime power/pattern fulltime, etc until November or even January.

I wonder if the FCC will allow "booster" stations in Houston for The Goldern Triangle FM and AM stations? I left for an extended business trip in the NE US a week before Rita so have no idea what stations are even on from the GT.

For those stations that were destroyed, if their were any, or lost their tower(s), I wonder if the FCC will allow these stations to set up temporary studios in Houston?

Possibillities FM: KCOL 92.5; KQXY 94.1; KYKR 95.1; KAYD 101.7; KTCX 102.5; KKMY 104.5 and KIOC 106.1. I realize there were would be spacing issues between Houston stations and co-channel stations, although the FCC could waive the spacing requirements for a couple of months and the co-channels might have to go to a Class A signal for the same period of time.

Possibilities AM: KLVI 560 on their 5kW daytime signal I don't think a "booster" would be necessary as KLVI has a strong signal into metro Houston. The rest of the stations would be spacing issues that could be waived for a few months and broadcast non-directional from towers inside The Loop. KDEI 1250, KSET 1300, KOLE 1340 and KIKR 1450 could use their normal frequencies. The nearest stations to KOLE 1340 is KVNN Victoria and KRBA Lufkin. KIKR 1450, nearest stations are KCTI Gonzales and KNET Palestine and don't think there would be any interference issues on either frequency from Houston. The others would have to be shoehorned into different frequencies, but I think doable. KZZB 990; KUHD 1150 (could slide to 1160), KBED 1510 and KOGT 1600.

With the number of people from The Golden Triangle that are moving to Houston for a few months or longer having their hometown stations listenable in Houston would be a plus and the FCC seems to be doing many things to ease the burden on stations.

I suppose there would be the chance of some East Texas and Western Louisiana stations that could do the same same thing.

I'm sure there must be a tower inside The Loop that could handle the additional antenna or several towers and run the FM stations at a Class C2 power or even C3. KPTY 104.9 as a C3 has very good coverage from downtowm.

I know you can not get a station on the air overnight, but I would think that the stations could be up and running in a short time frame. As long as the signal is clear the rest doesn't have to be "pretty" just functional. Also what about the stations that the US Armed Forces uses that they drop into/near war zones, those are up and running in a matter of hours? Of course this would likely envolve FEMA which equals SOL.

Far fetched idea or in the realm of reality?

Welcome back Mike to the boards, missed your posts, yeah I dont realy think KCTI will be any problem, hell 15 miles out your already loosing that signal, its not a very strong station, but I gues the most good it does is cover Gonzalas good night and day, KVNN does a fair good coverage, that one might be a problem, but probably not for night time since its only a daytime powered station. I had to take down both my TV and FM antennas from out at my place in Lavaca county due to Rita might of made a direct path through there. Hopefully by the weekend I can have it back up.<P ID="signature">______________
