If you're convinced that interest in broadcast radio is waning irreversably, you need to listen to Amateur Radio Newsline on the 146.73 repeater Monday nights at 8 PM. It seems that every week comes another story of the FCC tracking down yet another unlicensed FM radio station. Heck, they sell the transmitters and antennas on eBay!

It's my opinion that if interest in listening to broadcast radio was waning people wouldn't risk the heavy fines that come along with pirate broadcasting. The $64,000,000 question is this: how can you tap into this and make your stations profitable?

It's not like they're actively out scanning the bands and driving around towns look for pirates. Only stations that broadcast 24/7 seem to get busted. And that's after being on for years, in some cases many years.

The FCC doesn't have the resources for going after weekend hobby broadcasters anymore. They only go after the extreme cases and those causing interference. Interference usually comes from someone using a home-brew amplifier. Nowadays all but the cheapest of the cheap of the transmitters you can buy online put out a pretty clean signal.

I went to a Drive in the other night and the FM signal they use for the sound carried about a mile!
