Looks like more change at the Austin Border Media cluster as Jay Wachs has left the building. As a client, I can tell you that I was never impressed with him. It seemed that his stories and promises to my business and my staff were always...underwhelming. Caught this story and thought it was interesting that it hadn't been mentioned here.

Will Border promote from within? Will Steve Wilder, who was demoted when Wachs came to town, be given an opportunity to lead again? He's been in this market for many decades and is well liked and respected by many clients, me included. Or, will they try another approach? OR, does it not matter because these stations remain irrelevant?

True Oldies is doing well in the ratings ... but have they been able to monetize it? At last check, the Horn was still their top biller.

There is more to the Border story than meets the eye. Wachs did everything he could to try to save this cluster. He put several million on the books in his 18 months there. Programming offered no support. There was even movement afoot to sabotage Wachs' efforts. As far as we are concerned, he exceeded our expectation as clients and always went the extra mile to get the job done. We have never seen an employee strive to do so much with so little. Mr. Wachs will be sorely missed whether his detractors realize it or not.

Waches is apparently a also a cracked egg, or suffers from delusions of grandeur. The hudson 2003 posting is obviously Waches himself, since his only other post is on the Cleaveland board referencing WDMT

Well I hope they keep the True Oldies Channel. It is the only Austin radio station I can keep on for hours at a time!!! During commercial breaks I fliip the dial to 99.7 if they have commercials on it during that time it is back to 98.9 on my walkman. At home it's straight 98.9 on Monday thru Fridays.

Border Media moves quickly to fill the position.

From All Access:

BORDER MEDIA has appointed veteran broadcaster JOHN HIATT Dir./Sales for its five-station cluster in AUSTIN, TX. Most recently Hiatt has overseen the 4R Broadcasting group of stations in San Angelo, and prior to that, he had worked in the AUSTIN market for over a decade for companies including CBS/INFINITY and HIATT MARKETING GROUP.
