Border Media Flips Two In Austin

From All Accsss:

BORDER MEDIA Regional Mexican KKLB/AUSTIN and sister Tejano KTXZ have flipped to Mexican Oldies.

Univision tried this format almost 3 yrs ago in San Antonio and it didn't work. Let's see if Austin can support it.

Univision did not try it 4 years ago. HBC did. It was horribly done, and messed up. the VP of Programming responsible is no longer with the company.

The format seems to have much appeal lately amongst broadcasters...Clear Channel has put its version ("La Preciosa") successfully in San Jose/San Francisco (KSJO 92.3) and Las Vegas (KWID) and other markets. It seems to have gotten off to a good start in Dallas (KEGL 97.1). Other recent flips to it include San Diego (XHOCL 99.3) and Tulsa (KIZS 101.5).

I'm sure David can talk about Univision's recent flips to the format -- KBTQ 96.1 to "Recuerdos"; WPPN 106.7 Chicago this week. Univision already has experience with the format -- KRCD/KRCV "Recuerdos" in LA.

Entravision launched a different variant -- a Spanish-language "Jack" approach called "Jose" on several of its stations out west this week.

SBS's WCMQ-FM 92.3 Miami has been "Clasica 92" for many years now.

Radio One might want to try this for their floundering KROI in Houston. Their current Hispanic initiative doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

Re: Not Univision

The KKLB & KTXZ flip actually occured last
week. The 12th or 13th of October. They new
format may be hampered by it's weak coverage
of the Austin market. So, when or if do we expect
to hear the same format on San Antonio's
KRIO?

I think Digital 104.1 will flip but not to Spanish oldies. BMP will more than likely continue going after the younger generation with either Hip Hop or possibly Dance. Digital 104.1 is still supporting Euro dance on Friday's and Saturday's from 1am til 4am.

FYI, BMP already has a Hip Hop station in Laredo- KNEXT 106.1

No "s" on the end. "Recuerdo" would be #1 in LA, 12+ if it 70'ed the whole market. It is generally #1 or #2 in South Central, where it has a signal. Recuerdo dates back to early 2000, so has nearly 6 years of history now.

But it plays Cuban and Spanish oldies, and has no appeal to anyone not Cuban... average age is about 55. The Preciosa and Recuerdo formats average mid-30's as they are adult hits stations, not oldies.

I was wondering if they still mixed dance that late, I listened a few times a while back, I think they should jump it up a couple of hours from 10-3am or something like that. I think maybe they should try something like HotZ 95 in Corpus does, plays just about everything, its a good station down there.
