Bored to death

This market is so freaking boring. I wish 3 or 4 stations would flip formats and give Columbus radio listeners something to get excited about. What we have now is so lame and nobody has the balls to do anything about it. I wish I had a reason to cancel my SiriusXm subscription but I don't think that's ever going to happen. We don't even have anything to talk about on this board because apathy has set in a long time ago.

It's been what, 20 years since Hot 105? 25 years since 92X? When will we ever get a new CHR in this town? When will we ever get something new and fresh? If my life depended on it, I would have been dead a long time ago.

I just shake my head in disappointment.

I'm excited about what I'm doing, and the last time I checked my balls were still down there. Special fourth anniversary show aired and streamed two Thursdays ago, which was our 373rd episode, continuous underwriting support from Used Kids Records since March of '09 is still being received, the Dispatch is still helping to get the word out about us, Lesley Gore and Gang of Four are our current featured artists, the sound quality on WCRS is now better than ever -- yep, all is well with "Yesterday's Top Secrets"! Sure, it'd be nice to have it existing as a 24-hour-a-day format on a commercial station, but if PDs, GMs, and owners are satisfied with 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 12+ ratings and see no need to contact me, then I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon.

The people that run WNCI run the old Hot 105 and 92X frequencies. Not to mention they have own all the strongest FMs in town while the other companies have 1 strong signal and the rest are rimshots. If Wilkes throws away a long standing signal like QFM96, Saga tosses out Sunny 95, or North American tosses out 99.7 The Blitz not only will you get protests but you'll see them losing their moneymakers as well. Mix 107.9 is about as close to a second CHR that they will go. So Wilkes and North American could use their rimshots to give us a second CHR but they are happy with what they got. Not only that but they won't get too much of WNCI's listener due to various side of town having a weak signal.

Really couldn't agree more. Radio in this town bores me for the most part. 93.3, Rewind and 97.1 are by far the three stations I listen to most. I have 610 on sometimes, but on AM it's usually 700 for me.
I am thankful for my TuneIn and IHeartRadio apps.

Mix 1079 is slowly becoming a second option for CHR. They're all about transitioning instead of just outright flipping. They've added Nicki Minaj, new Rihanna, PSY, Ke$ha and a handful of others. Adult CHR is what they are currently.

Yes as much as I hate Clear Channel for what they did to Columbus, I love their iHeart app. If it wasn't for the apps and satellite, I'd go nuts.

Mix just doesn't do it for me. They're like a lamer version of WNCI. We need something new and something great.

That iHeart is good if you listen to the stations from the other companies that Clear Channel alowed on there. Otherwise you can check out most Chr's that CC runs in the overnight and pretty much get the same music log as WNCI.

I remember the rumor that 98.9 was up for grabs from Radio One. It would be nice to see Saga pick it up and launch a new CHR Energy 989, modeled after their new Milwaukee property www.energy1069.com

From a sales standpoint, they'd have Energy, Mix, Sunny and Rewind all reaching females.

It's fun to dream

I'm sure you're right but I don't listen to those stations on iHeart, I listen to Club Phusion, Evolution, and Spin Cycle.

I did read about the flip to Energy about a month ago. I've been to Milwaukee and I see no reason why they can't do the same thing here.

Fun facts:

Milwaukee is the largest city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, the 28th most populous city in the United States, and 39th most populous region in the United States.

Columbus is the largest city in the U.S. state of Ohio, the 15th most populous city in the United States, and 32nd most populous region in the United States.

If we were as big as NYC or LA we would not be loaded with the 4 country stations we have now. Saga could still fire up an energy format just by making rewind a 1 signal station instead of a 2 station simulcast. Question would be would energy go to 103.5 or 104.3? Either way one side of Columbus loses.

It would stir things up if they bought 98.9 and put this on. At least CC would be on watch in the metro.

I first visited Columbus 20 years ago and Hot 105 was a pretty unique and exciting radio station
to listen to. Just found that that the apartment maintenance person wanted to go to work for
92X and WSNY when they changed from WVKO-FM. She told me she had third phone and those were the radio stations she wanted to work for in the 80s.

Can mix 107.9 be considered close to a CHR format? If so, dose Columbus need another CHR format?

What radio markets are more interesting and/or exciting then Columbus and why? Personally,
I don't think we have it all that bad a radio market here. What changes would work and make
Columbus a better radio market?

Jake works for WCRS-LP and he considers WCRS-LP the best station in Columbus. That have some unique show on their station and WCRS-LP certainly fills a niche in the market if you are
able to hear the station at all.

The bottom line is I don't consider Columbus such a boring radio market, far from it.

Mix 1079 is more CHR-leaning than it's ever been, but it's not quite CHR. It is Adult CHR due to those Hot AC hits that they still play. It sounds real good though and WNCI listeners could listen to it everyday and not notice a huge difference except the big rhythmic hits.
