The word "boss" was dead more than 40 years ago even before KHJ used it.

Boss radio was used on KXOA 1470 Sacramento in 1968.

It was not. Boss Hair Grooming for Men, for example, was a popular product up through the end of the 60s.

Just because YOU don't like the term doesn't mean you can make things up.

Now just hang loose and be groovy, man. Let it all hang out.

Nope, boss was out ... with kids.

Maybe not with the old folks.

Early 60s term -- cool.

The origins of "boss" would not apply to MEN'S hair dressing at all even if you used it Johnny.

I'm groovin', but you're HEAVY ... man.

KHJ was up on the latest "lingo" being used on the streets. "Boss" was one of those terms taken from the black neighborhoods. Read the history of KHJ and Boss Radio. It's all there.
______________

BOSS RADIO

Wonderful. I didn't know Oldies stations were targeting 55+ anymore (?).

Re: Boss ...

but trying to recreate 1966 with the same tone & language is part of what's killed many oldies stations.

A huge risk and a huge mistake.

Hey, let's give it a chance. If it's not around in a year, we'll know.

I think a good test pad is necessary, to see if the trend towards 70s is natural or forced.

And it will also be a good tool to see if a 55+ oldies station can make it.

I'm reserving judgment--which is more than can be said for a couple people in this thread alone.

Arguably true. However, I think the problem with most oldies stations is that they've gotten slack in presentation. I will concede some it may be due to budget cuts for talent and marketing. If your market has a history of using reverb, then use it, sparingly. Too many AC records and/or classic rock records will kill it. Know the market - know the format - know your target.

Oldies stations SHOULD be BIG and FUN. Does that mean "Boss" jocks, no, not necessarily. Again, depends on the market. Let's use WMJI since I worked there for 6 years, including it's first (of 4) Marconi. Former WMJI PM Driver Scott Howitt would most likely be considered a "boss jock". He rhymed. He was the only one on the station doing so. He was unique, and his style wasn't "pukey". He delivered contemporary content with an old school style. He was there 11 years and never dropped below #3 25-54 - IN ELEVEN YEARS! It can be done.

I believe people want to hear their favorite record(s), want to be entertained and want a station that serves them, whether it's in the community or on the air. Plain and simple.
______________

BOSS RADIO

I'm all about giving a new station a chance, absolutely. And give the owners a few points for flying in the face of today's Oldies environment.

However, what these guys appear to be doing is going BACK to the Oldies formula of the past 20 years that's getting killed just about everywhere around the country during the past couple of years (and the resulting disappearance of Oldies in dozens of markets). They haven't re-invented or evolved the format- they've regressed back to what HASN'T been working.

The 55+ listening is what's caused most Oldies stations to abandon ship. That is what doesn't make sense about this deal.

Boss Jocks

My biggest sense of puzzlement comes from the fact they're not necessarily re-
inventing Oldies- it's that they're using the strategy that's been resulting in Oldies station shares doing down and Oldies changing formats so much this past year.

In fact, in most focus groups over the past 15-20 years on Oldies stations, the whole "flashback/nostalgic" presentation has kept many who love the music from making the Oldies station their favorites. Up & fun and entertaining, hell yes.
But the whole late '60s Boss Jock approach stopped being hip in 1969 and is even less hip (IF you want to be competitive anywhere in the 25-54 demo) today.

Re: Boss ...

But Batman, the "Big Boss" Pepsi 2 Ltr bottle was invented in the early 70's. First a mixture of Styrofoam & Glass, later evolving into the 2 Ltr plastic soda bottle still sold today!.

Boss Radio not Hip?

I assume you didn't live in "Boss Angeles"?. Boss hipness continued into the 70's, some people just turned square about there, and didn't dig it anymore.

Boss Radio Hip?

Doesn't matter- we're talking about radio in 2005 and this station is in Sacramento.

What "was" has little to do with what "is".
