Boston Arbitron Radio Ratings: February 2012

WILD-AM get a Big Fat - !! Nice going Radio One . Kiss 108 is still the Champ . WEEI better hope for a good season for the chicken and beer out of shape Baseball team . Sports Hub is Killing WEEI .

Is Magic doing anything different that would account for this rise ?
WFNX is still out wondering in the desert looking for a whole number, post election will WRKO join them ?
WPLM appears to have halted its slide.

Only 8 months or so till WODS & WROR vault back up to the top, get psyched !

i know wror is getting decent ratings but,any chance they go after kiss??? they seem to slip a little this month there is no reason for wxks to be all alone near the top!!

3.9 v. 3.6 isn't "killing." There's enough room for two sports stations, and I bet they'll stay relatively neck and neck.

Yup, and they get a big fat check every month from RCI and/or the Chinese govt. All they have to do is maintain the place and pay the electric bill.

That is the most depressing statement I read all day. :(

These indeed are the 6 plus, but there are other demos considered more important. Anyway:

--WKLB ranks fourth with female-attracting country
--Sports Hub slightly better than EEI in both number and cume
--WTKK higher than RKO, though I don't think I like anybody on 96.9, personally. Both they and
RKO not as high as the old days. WXKS steady in ratings number, slighly lower in cume.

If the stations go neck and neck; a battle shall be born' if not, maybe it'll be flipped. It took a few months but WIP has taken most of WPEN's listeners (our two sports FM's in Philly) and dropped it to the lowest rated FM (and station, it's AM is only .2 and still falls below the second lowest) in Philly. Besides, Febuary isn't a good sports month.

And isn't this 98.5 a new format in Boston?

Not really, The Sports Hub launched in August 2009, it's been over 2 1/2 years.

Both sports stations will get parts of the audience, and I don't know if one or the other would
flip. Keep in mind each has PBP of 2 major teams...heck, if things really got bad for EEI they
could go to a music or basic talk format, with PBP remaining (Rock 93.7...with the Sox and Celts, too!) but this town at least right now is big enough for both of them. I could suggest something
like blowing up WRKO in favor of ethnic and moving hosts like Howie (if renewed) to a "talk
and sports WEEI 93.7" but no, I'd think things go as is.

As for Feb not being a good sports month, you'd think people would be interested in a football
game our local gridiron gang played in Indianapolis on Feb. 5...and the post-mortem talk afterwards. That at least must have gotten some attention.

I may be wrong, but I believe the Superbowl is a television, rather than a radio, event.

So where is "kalendar" with his unauthorized (wink, wink) show by show rankings for WEEI and 98.5? As I recall, the last time he displayed them Gresh and Zolak had a slight lead over Mutt and Merloni. If they got rid of Gresh and replaced him with almost anyone I'd listen to them. I can't take Gresh, but I dislike Mutt even more, so I usually have 103.3 or 105.7 on for those four hours. I keep trying to listen to those shows especially when there's a lot of sport happenings, but within the first few minutes of Muttnansky trying and failing to be funny and clever, I switch to 98.5 where Gresh is bellowing like a mental patient.

As Racoon said, the town is big enough for two stations. It's too bad that the two worst programs are on opposite each other.

they should rename 98.5 the sportshub as

98.5 the fan it sounds so much better

No, they shouldn't, and no, it doesn't. SportsHUB was a natural for an all-sports station in Boston, "the hub of the universe," as it has been called for decades.

The one station CBS should be worried about is WBZ....AM. Fifth overall? Not a good sign. At a time where all-news stations are sprouting up in other markets and doing well, 1030 is dropping off. If they are fifth 6+, you wonder where they are 25-54, as their overall numbers are propped up by 55+ cume. The revolving door in mornings since Gary left can't be helping. If this trend continues, will they drop the talk, go 24/7 news and move to FM, like they've done in Chicago and DC? The clock may be ticking on WODS....

5th out of 50+ stations is nothing to sneeze at. I wouldn't say their numbers are dropping off either, they're well inside the normal statistical and seasonal variation.

I wouldn't really call it a "revolving door" in mornings. Ed Walsh did four years after Gary LaPierre, and now you have Joe Mathieu who isn't going anywhere. 3 mornings anchors in a year would be a revolving door, this is nothing.

Dropping talk in evenings and overnights? Not really gonna FIRE UP the advertisers. Not happening.

Finally, numbers and what they mean to ad buys: WBZ is a legendary monster. There's no competition, period. You don't have to be #1 25-54 to get ad buys, otherwise only one station would be getting buys and everybody else would die. WBZ is still a huge money maker, and I don't see anything to change that fact for the next couple of years.
