Boston Arbitron Radio Ratings: February 2012

maybe 1030's 'infomercials' (void of neutral info and lots of mercial) are killing some weekend dayparts. ....following in the footsteps of 680.

Why do they STILL list WJMN as Rhythmic AC? It is basically Hop Hop with little to no adult appeal.

The last I saw WJMN ranked higher in 25-54 than several stations that actually do target adults. I think this is a case of too many adult stations fragmenting each other and not enough younger targeted stations in Boston.

Interesting. WBUR and WBZ-AM both see noticeable drops from Holiday to February. WBZ-FM and WEEI both down as well. Does WEEI still run a lot of quasi-political talk during the day? (and does WBZ-FM/Hub do it, too?)

And to top it off...WGBH *up* a bit, but still well below WBUR.

I don't get it. Political fatigue from a loooong primary season? Especially a long primary season considering everyone knew Romney was gonna win Massachusetts? Why is WGBH up, though? (or is it just that all the bumps the news/talk stations had were unsustainable, whereas WGBH didn't get a bump and thus is not seeing a drop at the moment?)

Neither WBZ nor WBUR experienced "noticeable drops" from Holiday to February. WBZ's last 5 books went 6.9 - 6.0 - 5.9 - 6.3 - 5.8. Except for that November 6.9, WBZ has stayed in the statistical ballpark. Little variations like that don't mean a thing.

As for WBUR, I really don't know what you're looking at, because their past 5 books went 4.2 - 3.9 - 3.2 - 4.2 - 4.0. Except for that low Holiday 2012 3.2 share, they've held steady as well.

WBZ-FM went 4.1 - 4.1 - 4.4 - 5.2 - 3.9. Aside from that January book which was due to the Superbowl run by the Pats, they've held very steady.

WEEI went 3.8 - 3.5 - 3.4 - 4.4 - 3.6. Aside from an exciting January book (Pats talk,) you guessed it! They've held steady.

Look at the cumes, not the AQH.

WBUR Holiday = 387900 January = 427100 February = 379800
WGBH Holiday = 254500 January = 264200 February = 274700
WBZ-AM Holiday = 748200 January = 732400 February = 682800
WBZ-FM Holiday = 781400 January = 734700 February = 573800
WEEI-FM Holiday = 539300 January = 643600 February = 486700

Except for WGBH, all of the big news/talk stations are down for February. Whether that's statistically significant or not, I don't know. And again, these are 6+ numbers which tend to be kinda useless I suppose...

WJMN moved up from #6 25-54 in January to a tie for #4 in February.

It could be TIED for #1 25-54 with WXKS but the fact is it is NOT Rhythmic AC! It is basically ALL HIP HOP!

I don't know what station you're listening to but WJMN has not been "basically ALL HIP HOP" for quite sometime now.

Hats off to Jeff Katz and all the employees at Clearchannel's WXKS-AM......

The ratings continute to fall below 1.0.....the latest ratings show a 0.7 , just 0.2 ahead
of a college station - WERS-FM.

What a joke !!!!!! Time to pull the plug on that waste of air space.

The 2012 Presidential elections can't even help them , what happens after voting day ?

Look for your local divison of the Enemployment Office to be a little more crowded with the likes of the
so-called handicapped Jeff Katz , Jay Severin , the queen bee Paula O'Connor as well as the station's producers
and board ops.

I hear next Sun 94.5 will become Talk 94.5 :) (Er, what is the date of this particular Sunday...?)

Not long ago The Smoking Gun reported on a strange package sent to Rush Limbaugh. It mentioned
the address of The Southern Command. Look that up on Google Maps and check out what
the multi-multi-multi- million dollar house looks like from the aerial view. Rush is making $50 million a year at least, and stations like WXKS are bringing in at least some $$ through running ads. Ratings aren't everything. If they were, then even with these ratings, 1200 would have switched to
True Oldies, Prog. Talk (...again...), Spanish, or Brother Stair long ago.

>>CLEAR CHANNEL Talk WXKS-A (TALK 1200)/BOSTON morning host JEFF KATZ broadcast his show live this morning from the FISHER HOUSE at the VETERANS ADMINISTRATION hospital in BOSTON in an on-air tribute to the 236th anniversary of the U.S. MARINE CORPS... KATZ has been a longtime supporter of the Marines through his Hoorah for Heroes campaign collecting comfort items to ship to Marines deployed around the world.

All the stations that don't show any rating... Does this mean thay didn't pay dues to Arbitron or not enough people listen to rank?

Could mean either things -- either not paying or they do not have listeners who are carrying PPM devices.

Since the PPM came on board, WJIB has not placed. They do not encode their signal. Owner Bob Bittner chooses not to since commercial sales aren't part of his business model. Plus, royalty rates are set partially using ratings info, so if WJIB gets "no ratings" Bob probably just pays the minimum fee, keeping his costs down.

98.5 the fan it sounds so much better

Boston's nickname is "The Hub", which makes "Sports Hub" a unique name to this area.

A philosopher in the 1800s described Boston as "The Hub of the Solar System", which I think is the origination of the term.

Anyway, I am in favor of localized names instead of canned generic names like "The Fan". For example, 95.7 Ben FM in Philly, in tribute to local Benjamin Franklin.

Also, 97.5 The Phanatic in Philly.

Brookline restaurant the Coolidge Corner Clubhouse has sandwiches with sports related names.
Referring to a longtime Boston sports announcer, there's the Eddie Andleman: "Eddie, we bet even
you cannot finish this one," read the menu. And since they have a steak tip sandwich (with
mushrooms, onions, and peppers if you wish) and Phil. is known for cheese steaks ("I'll have a whiz wit"), they name it after the longtime Phillies mascot: The Philly Phanatic.

fmradio1: thanks for the explanation! Knew it had something like that. Listeners to WJIB or
WJTO know about the fundraising model (rather than ads) and are used to the Voice of Bob
intoning such things as "Cut up your credit cards. Most of the companies are evil." :)
