Boston Arbitron Radio Ratings: July 2012

Can we assume by the lack of a posting from "kalendar" that WEEI hasn't lost any ground in the target demographics vs. 98.5?

98.5 has to hope for a very short (if it happens) NHL Lockout

I'm hearing from a sportswriter friend who used to cover the Whalers and still keeps in touch with other NHL writers that the league is preparing for a three-month lockout, with the abbreviated season hopefully starting with the outdoor game in early January.

Arbitron has put strict(er) restrictions on discussion of station rankings in the various demographics.
This has happened concurrently with the (fairly recent) non-publishing of unsubsubscribing Arbitron stations in the various markets.

The press can only be vague with rankings or point out a particular station or two.

Even before the restrictions, Kalendar was breaking the rules BIG TIME. The postings stopped once the numbers didn't suit his desires anymore. Just some pathetic CBS employee thinking EEI was dead meat.

They (both sides) would be insane to let another one happen. It's still a niche sport. It's big around here, but not so, in a lot of other NHL cities. This time a few franchises might not come back.

Did it ever occur to you guys that maybe the reason "Kalender" isn't posting is because you guys reported him and now he's been banned from the message board?

We want real numbers but we chase people away who post them. Let's not do that again.

Real numbers? Kalendar ONLY posted demos in which WBZ-FM was ahead. Those aren't real numbers, those are "the numbers that make us look good."

What about people 18-49? people 25-54? people 18-34? Or do women not count as listeners?

The male demos are key, but they don't tell the whole story.

You're not going to convince me or anyone that Kalendar was some sort of holy unbiased deliverer of information.

Advertisers targeting sports listeners aren't going after women in the money demos. That's why God created Adult Contemporary. I'd imagine that too many women showing up in the ratings breakdown might actually hurt ad sales. At the very least, it's nothing that a sports station -- or a sports station fanboy -- would want to brag about.

The next time "real" numbers are posted may well be the time the owners of this board get themselves sued by Arbitron. The "real" numbers (other than 6+, M-Su, 6AM-12AM, which are released to the public) are exclusively for the use of subscribers, per Arbitron's licensing agreement.

People who have access to "real" numbers put their jobs on the line by posting them here. I'd almost bet Kalendar got slapped hard by his employer, if he still has one, or got banned by the board moderator.

I wouldn't try tagging the toe of 98.5 yet... The Sox blow and the Pats are looking pretty good. The next book is covering the present time and audience dynamics.

Let's wait and see how it shakes out. If 850/93.7 takes the next couple of books...

Except the owners of the board cannot be sued for someone else breaking the Arbitron contract. They probably would get a subpoena for the records of somebody posting the numbers, though.

Aren't board owners ultimately responsible for what gets posted on them? If not, why go through the trouble of moderation? To avoid the burden of having to "rat out" (lol) your posters to Arbitron's legal eagles?

Kalender posted the same numbers that Chad Finn posts, which are Men 25-54, 18-34, 18-49. How is that slanted?
The point is that he only posted when 98.5 (his station, I assume) won. If WEEI won he didn't post. Once WEEI pulled ahead, it became pretty obvious that he had an agenda and wasn't just providing information.

BTW, I never reported him.

Under federal law website operators are not liable for what other people post on the site. Besides, Arbitron would only have a contract claim against the person providing the numbers, not the person who publishes them, unless that person was a party to the Arbitron contract.
