BOSTON ARBITRON RATINGS: AUGUST 2011

Let's see: a 20,000-listener dropoff in WXKS-AM's cume just before the return of Severino. AM 1200 had been trending a little upward until the previous month. It will be interesting to see if recent programming moves make a difference.

You beat me to it. IMO Clear Channel rolled the dice BIG TIME by bringing him on board.... I imagine he ain't workin' on the cheap.

Prob not making what Lesser Media was paying him, though.
We'll see what happens with EEI // on FM...how long will TKK stick with talk? They can always switch to
variety hits, now that "Mike" has but a few days to live.

When the trend both in Boston and in the whole country is moving Talk / News / Sports / etc to FM why would WTKK go backwards?

If there's that big a hole fine, but really we still have a lot more "music" on FM in Boston than in most markets.

I'd think they'd try a more News / Talk approach (go after WBZ) first and see if they can win that battle while WBZ is still an AM.

You'd think they can take away at least a bit of their listeners.

The nationwide trend is showing less and less people ever even tune to AM, so being on the FM dial is the place to gain new listeners.

I know, WBZ is a powerhouse and may never get taken down, but CBS just tried taking down WINS in NYC, why can't someone try to take down WBZ here?

Not that I'm in favor of it, or would listen to much of what WTKK has ever put out thus far....I'm a WBZ AM fan and would keep listening, but thinking long term here, why wouldn't they give it a shot.

There's also something to be said for them cornering the entire segment of music radio they are already in by adding a 3rd but slightly different station to the mix. Sure they may all cannibalize each other a bit, but they'd also control a big section of the population.

Man I love radio changes and seeing how they all shake out.

If their ratings or billings were bad, they might go to music, I meant. Otherwise I could see them sticking with talk. As for a move to news, maybe, but a news staff could be expensive. Besides isn't there already more than a bit of news on FM via WGBH and WBUR programming?
