BOSTON AREA AM-STATIONS: 20 YEARS AGO

Someone here asked about an AM-station list of 20 years ago. In 1993, I published a list of all AM's, and here it is:

1570-WPEP - news, music (now gone)
1600-WUNR * ethnic

I published such a list in 1980, too, and when I find it, I'll share it here.

I take it * means "still the same"? WICE was operating as WHIM Country but without the callsign! Wasn't 650 then 1050/WRPT?

What about the punching bag that is WALE in Providence? ;D Wasn't that on the air 20 years ago?

The 1570 in Bev may have been WBVD by then or
even WNSH..studios in places like Pickering Wharf
Salem, Endicott (first incarnation) or Willow St. S. Hamilton. I think
it wasn't WMLO then. By 92 or 94 it may have been
NSH and from the drafty 2nd flr of a hardware warehouse
we had Brian Less w blues and me with an all Kinks
show Sun nights.

1470-WSRO - music, news (now in Belmont with ethnic & night standards)

You mean Watertown. Not sure why Alex Langer chose Watertown over Belmont for the 1470 CoL. I also don't know whether WRCA or WAZN qualifies as Watertown's first broadcast service. Both stations are licensed to Watertown. I guess there is some advantage to that, for example if WAZN wanted to upgrade its signal and had to find a different community that also lies within the station's 5 mV/m daytime contour.

I think 1440 14 Q was gone by then...
they went under in January 1991, if I
recall...So by 93, they must have been
either simulcasting AAF or they
became sportsradio "The Team"

entry for WVEI 1440 Worc from Wiki.:
>>On September 3, 1991 WFTQ changed its call letters to WVEI and began simulcasting WEEI, a sports-talk station at that time broadcasting at 590 kHz. On October 10, 1994 WVEI changed calls to WWTM and was known as "Worcester's Team". It briefly had a locally-based sports format.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WVEI_(AM)
(For a time WVEI had Imus, Fab Sports Babe, some local hosts and Sports Byline. By 96 1440
was back to a WEEI, now on 850, simulcast.)

Both Gary Tanguay and Greg Dickerson were local hosts on WWTM-AM 1440. Not sure about Gary but I believe it may have been Greg's 1st on air job. IIRC, Greg started as the producer for Gary's show but before long they were co-hosts.

Yes, * = same now as then. And yes, 650 used to be 1050 in Peterborough, NH. But my list is of stations audible in the Boston area; which is also why I didn't include Worcester's 1230, 1310 and 1440. And also I didn't include 990 Greenville, RI because it isn't audible..... almost anywhere.

At the time I made this list, SOMEtime in 1993, 1570 was definitely WMLO.

OK maybe it was 94 or so that I was there and it was WNSH by then (or poss. WBVD)

But wait: Wikipedia's entry for what is now WMVX says:
>>Former callsigns
WMLO (1963–1979)
WBVD (1979–1984)
WNSH (1984–2012)

I thought the 'BVD calls were there a couple yrs past '84 (T shirt "BVD: First thing you put on the morning")
but going by the above the WMLO calls were long gone by 1993. But maybe you had them correct...will try to find out.

OK from NERW in '97:
http://www.bostonradio.org/nerw/nerw-970724.html
>>You can't keep a good set of call letters down...or even a pretty mediocre set. Case in point: WBVD, the calls that graced Beverly's AM 1570 between its glory days as WMLO and its current incarnation as WNSH. Dormant since the late 80s, the WBVD calls have reappeared at 95.1 in Melbourne FL

That suggests the BVD calls may have been on 1570 a few yrs past 1984...
