Boston bomb coverage on North Florida Radio

I didn't hear the news until about an hour after the blasts. I was on my way out so I tried to find details on the radio... here's what I was able to find on Pensacola stations:

WCOA 1370 - regular programming
WCOA-FM 100.7 - regular programming
WBSR ESPN 1450/101.1 - mixed national ESPN and ABC news feeds from Boston
WEBY 1330 - regular programming
WNRP 1620 - live & local Pensacola news combining info from multiple sources including updates from the local Pensacola running club that reported all 20 or so locals at the race were fine.

News Talk 1620 obviously handled the breaking news best. At this time we still don't know if this was a foreign attack along the lines of 9/11 or a domestic attack like Oklahoma City. The ESPN 101.1 translator was the only FM coverage of the bombings. Very disappointed in the other news/talk stations sticking with regular programming... Especially WCOA-FM 100.7 sticking with regular recorded programs... sad... WCOA had a chance to make a big statement today and dropped the ball. Was no one at the station capable of switching to a live ABC news feed or taking the to the microphone like WNRP 1620?

This goes to show you "When news breaks, we don't air it.."
Is there no one in the studios on a MONDAY to switch to the satellite feed?? Sheesh, and to this, I hearby thank you Crapulus for keeping us informed, what a waste of a 100KW signal..do something useful with it, and bring back Journey FM.

I had to tune in to WBZ because I'm too far away to hear 1.620's daytime signal out here. It's best to hear it from the horses mouth.

Cumulus, here's the golden crap award.. Thanks for keeping the gulf coast listeners informed... NOT

The radio stations here where I live didn't go wall to wall coverage, but as I was driving home from work I heard several stations giving updates, even music stations. We have a classic rock station I listen to a lot and the the DJ was giving out updates everytime he came on the air. Our top country station also talked about it.

Those affected are in my prayers.

I expected nothing less from Cumulus in Pensacola. WCOA-FM is a waste of money and time in its current state.

Once WNRP gets its FM translator going, it's going to be embarrassing to see 100 kW get beaten like a red-headed stepchild by 99 watts.

How many formats has 100.7 had anyway? When I moved to Pensacola in the mid 90's they were Arrow 100, then when I moved in 2000 they had just switched to Q 100. I made several trips back down to the panhandle, but never paid attention to them. It sounds like they have been all over the place.

Too many, let's put WCOA-FM out of its misery. What part of NEWS/talk does Crapulus does not understand?

It's a shame a small mom and pop station kicked their ass with a crappy daytime signal to boot. (I believe 1.620 is a mom and pop, correct me if I'm wrong)

If any PD's are reading this, shame on ya'll for not stepping up to the plate and serving the community. I bet WAAZ went to their CBS network feed while this was going on to cover this.

Watch 107.3 become WNTM-FM to compete with WCOA.

I never checked any of the music stations. I caught wind of the explosion about 45 minutes after the news broke and was on my way out the door. Radio was my best choice for news coverage and since Pensacola has 5 news/talk stations I checked those first. I checked ESPN 101.1 only because I figured "maybe ESPN has a live sports talk show on Monday afternoon" and they were doing continuous coverage using ABC news assets. This was the only station running a national news feed which is what I would have expected all the news/talk stations to be carrying. I have to commend WNRP 1620 for going live/local and giving updates on local residents that had gone to the race.
We're any of the music stations carrying a CNN OR Fox News feed? Did WAAZ flip to CBS news? Very good questions, but I didn't think to check the music stations yesterday afternoon.

When I got home all four of the local TV network affiliates were carrying network news feeds. I did catch Fox 10 doing a local update and WEAR's 2 hour afternoon newscast was preempted by ABC news coverage.

What did WFLA Tallahassee or WFLF Panama City do? What did the Cox Jacksonville news station do? What did WNTM do? Charlie? Anyone?

WFLA in Tallahassee had Mark Levin on. Around 6:15 I caught part of the press conference, then it
appeared that perhaps Levin was doing some of the news coverage. Normally Dave Ramsey would have been on during the 6 to 8 p.m. slot.

I was able to catch WNRP 1620 out of Pensacola and heard some of their coverage.

Normally most Tally music stations are unmanned and voice-tracked so I didn't even bother to check tnem.

Was WCOA-FM really broadcasting recorded programs after the explosions in Boston, Massachusetts? I asked since the syndicated programs the station was set to broadcast between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. ("The Phil Valentine Show", "The Mark Levin Show", and "The Savage Nation") were usually live between those times from Monday through Friday.

The hourly news segments from ABC should have been enough for local listeners of WCOA-FM, since the explosions did not occur in the broadcast area of the station's transmitter and residents in the broadcast area of the station who knew someone personally who was living in Boston during the explosions would have had a good chance of learning about the explosions due to the many news outlets available. Those residents probably would have learned whether those folks they knew were all right or not before any news reporter.

We had it on about 10 min after it happened via Fox News on WFLF....of ocourse it was the primary topic on all the syndicated talk shows for the rest of the day.......Fox Sports devoted all of its programming during the time we carry them on WFLF (9pm-4am).....I was listening to it because I did transmitter maintenance on WFLF last night.....had the station off from about 1208pm until 1250am.....WPAP devoted its morning show to coverage and listener reaction this morning......coverage included interviews with someone high up in the marathon community from Birmingham (an ex Panama City resident) and with a representative of Dept of Homeland Security.

I started listening for news in the 2-3 o'clock hour. I first tuned to WCOA 100.7 and they were wrapping up a regular ABC news break that was reporting the bombing. They the went back to a talk show (don't know who) and made no mention of the bombing, just political jibber jabber. While flipping stations looking for the best coverage I kept going back to 100.7 but never heard any further mention of the bombing after that initial ABC news break. When I got to the house around 4pm I turned to Shepard Smith on Fox News and didn't turn back to the radio until this morning. This morning there was nothing but chatter about the bombing on all the stations I checked.

So yeah, it seems impossible but 100.7 was not carrying anything yesterday afternoon outside of the top/bottom hour ABC news breaks which I find unacceptable. We still don't know what happened yesterday but we do know it was meant to incite fear into all Americans.

Charlie's WFLF was doing proper news coverage according to his report. 10 minutes to get the story live, that's impressive!

WOKV (AM690) did continuous simulcast of FOX NEWS coverage all afternoon and evening until midnight and then flipped to Rusty Humphries after the midnight news break.

I was at work so I did not have a chance to sample other stations until I left work. Most other stations by the time I left work were playing music and giving updates during breaks in music and such.

690 is a very historic station down there... can anyone say APPPPPPPPPPPEE??? I even remember back in the old days, they break for news and they were a music station!

So Pensacola's new 100kw flame throwing FM News-Talker is the only big news station in North Florida that dropped the ball. Immagine how many folks would have loved to listen to a continuous ABC radio or TV news feed on Monday afternoon... For such a young News Talk station they really dropped the ball. 100.7 would have picked up a significant number of new, regular, listeners if someone had just flipped a switch to a satellite news feed but they stayed with the normal format. How sad. At least one of the five Pensacola News/Talk stations (1620 WNRP) and the Sports station (WBSR) were there to provide coverage... But Cumulus missed out. I can only assume that Cumulus sister news talker WFTW stayed in format down in Fort Walton also but I'm sure Kevin McKay at 99 Rock was relaying all the information he could find on the Internet to their listeners. 99 Rock is always on top of breaking news and traffic but I've never heard the station drop music except durring hurricanes.

WCOA-FM isn't like I expected it to be.

"When news breaks...screw you.. WCOA.."

WCOA-FM 100.7 was starting to grow on me. I was impressed that I was hearing local, Pensacola, news durring breaks. I was getting my hopes up that it would evolve into a good station. Monday they dropped the biggest ball ever tossed to them. Too bad.

You two agreeing on something. I am officially worried. Guys, it Cantulus. Why expect anything that would provide any type of customer service?
