Boston Clear Channel Slumboards

Back when Ackerly owned the billboards ( and when they also owned WBOS) and the economy was tanking, Mr Ackerly put words of wisdom up on the unsold space. All sorts of quotes from famous people. Looked a lot better than empty board space.

I will say that with the winter we have had, the material they use can get trashed, but they still need to clean them up

I think in the past, and maybe still today, billboard companies will/did put up public service announcements
on billboards that were in between advertisers. Serves as a placeholder; and offers a message to help serve
the community (and make the company look good). So you'd see "Take A Bite Out Of Crime", "Keep
America Beautiful", and "Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk". And it beats looking at a bunch of old, messy
snippets of old billboards

Country humor duo Homer and Jethro actually did a song about billboards, imagining that the messages on them were all mixed up after a storm. Thus, they saw: "Smoke Coca-Cola cigarettes, drink Wrigley's Spearmint beer
Ken-L-Ration dog food keeps your wife's complexion clear"... :)

CC must be having a real hard time these days, because I've seen "Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving" all the way up and down Brighton Avenue.

Remember when CCU had progressive talk on 1430 and 1200? They played the same PSA's all-day long every day ("pew...it stinks in here")

what i find interesting about this story is that clear channel has just built atleast 5 new billboards along the leveret connector to storrow drive from 93 south. but yet the spokesperson says they are having trouble finding advertisers.

IT COSTS MONEY to put up PSA's and station promotions on billboards. Ya know..... workers who actually place the messages there want to get paid for such.

CC should have stuck one of these up on Soldiers Field Road to remind Melissa Bell. :)

It seems (from what I've been reading at Radio-Info). Clear Channel is reluctant to sell, or get rid of property they no longer need. Example: When CC purchased, WSNE,WHJJ,WHJY in 2000. And moved them from a building that they owned
on 115 Eastern Avenue in East Providence (built btw, in 1977) to rent space at Oxford Street in Providence. They did not try at all to sell, lease, rent, renovate that property that has been sitting idle since 2001. Makes you really wonder how smart CC management really is......

The Eastern Ave site is still used for the transmitter housing.

The bigger problem with that site is it's decrepit state.
