Boston Dance

Would love to see this happen, but for one reason or another most companies and markets can't seem to make Dance work :(

Boston is deserving of a dance station. I gotta say though, upon hearing Star 93.7 it wasn't a shock that it got dropped for "Mike". 'KTU down here in New York City sounded better! Mix 102.7 sounded better! I barely heard ANYTHING new on that station.

Admittedly I don't know the Boston market too well but I always thought that Beantown was more of a "rock" town. Not to say there aren't dance music fans there...I know they have a scene and some history on the radio (Kiss 108).

Your best bet would be to see what happens with HD radio. I think that will be the best bet for dance fans in the Boston Metro area.

Probably a good call, Tony. Star was a nice station, and it was very dance friendly for a while... but still a far shot from pure dance, a la Energy or Party/Miami. I think there's a number of places where dance would garner some loyal listeners on an HD subchannel signal (many of the top 60 markets, maybe) once the ball gets rolling with that. There's still a few markets like Miami, Chicago, LA, DC, and maybe Philly and Detroit where dance could make it on a primary analog signal though. I don't know much about Boston either, but the outsiders' perception is that Boston doesn't have the same dance heritage as other cities I mentioned.

Programming

The reason why companies wont flip to dance because they dont know which programmer is good and which ones are the best.

They need to find a programmer who knows the scene, the audiences, and the DJs who can make mixes great on the dial.

Dance is marketable, yet companies dont see it. Why? because it is all about money and not the music.

Mike is not doing well.
Their best ratings are the same a Star's lowest
and Star wasn't that great.
Today's Sunday Globe has an article about Boston radio
and they refer to Mike as "floundering".
Star's best ratings were when they were very dance friendly.
The whole knee jack thing is so 10 minutes ago.

Finally, BJ makes a logical and intelligent post! But it's a moot issue.

It's been awhile since I've said it, so here it is again: Give up waiting on FM radio to give us dance. People pay for satellite TV and cable (few people I know don't have one of them), people should go where they can get what they want and that's satellite radio and the Internet.

While I have satellite radio for dance music and am an avid fan of
XM's BPM, there's nothing like hearing dance on local radio with a local flair.
In New York when KTU does it current dance mix shows there is nothing like it.
Unfortunately during the day they mix so many classics in their playlist that they lose me.
