Boston Globe Regional Story On ESPN Radio

I really hope they succeed.... I've been tuning in more during the day when WEEI gets off on tangents or is in one of its interminable commercial breaks. Nice to hear a different perspective. What I've heard of Felger's show is pretty good. Any show without Fred Smerlas automatically has an advantage.

I'd say Ms.Tang is educationally overqualified. But the gist of the story is that because of 890's affiliation with ESPN, it's better than 1510(SN): that's not going get it done for them, ESPN isn't what it once was. It's about signal strength, and 89 doesn't have it. The only way a sports station could go against Ordway and Co. with a degree of seriousness,is to have a nice FM station and some good talent(that would hit it's breaks on time!)

You may be forgetting something. The original sports incarnation of what is now WAMG was WBPS--when? around 1999? Not sure of the dates, but I have heard that the station was pulling decent ratings (a fraction of WEEI's but nevertheless surprisingly good). WBPS went belly up when the outfit that owned (or LMAed) it, Prime Sports Network, went belly up. Now, maybe the accusation that 2006 is not 1999 (or whenever) holds some water in this case, but the fact is that the work done to bring 1060 to the 890 site at night resulted in an upgrade to the site and hence an upgrade to the signal. For one thing, the old ground system, which had become pretty much non-existent, has been replaced, and if you saw Scott Fybush's Tower Site of the Week writeup a few months back, what looks like several $million of new and exotic-looking equipment has been added. Also, the guy responsible for keeping WAMG up to snuff technically, Craig Healy, is a top-flight CE. After the death of Bob Lund, who was CE for the site's original occupant, WGTR, I'm not sure that anyone competent was minding the store at the end of Sewell St. Now, two of the best in the business are responsible: Craig and Grady Moates, who is CE for WBIX, which uses the site at night.

Also, ESPN has its fingerprints all over this station. I'm sure they are somehow pumping in a good deal of money to get this thing going.

> Sorry Dan but you have some bad info on WAMG, Craig Healy only did the
a satellite dish install for me, I have been the CE of WAMG and WLLH
for the past 4 years through the full rebuild of the site. C Hall
