Boston Herald streaming radio...talk?

Meter, Royle, and who else?

posted above link via smartphone. Jon Meterparel, Jen Royle, and who else

>>The report states that the Boston Herald is planning to launch a full-fledged Talk station through their website and mobile apps. The station could potentially fill the voids left by last year’s flips of 96.9 WTKK and 1200 WXKS out of the Talk format. The only hosts mentioned by the site’s report for programs on the station are former WEEI host Jon Meterperel and current WEEI weekend host Jen Royle for a Sports program. The newspaper registered BostonHeraldRadio.com earlier this year.

>>The Boston Herald will announce an online radio station that will begin operation this month. The station will be mostly news/talk, but will have a sports-themed program co-hosted by Jen Royle and former WEEI morning drive personality Jon Meterperel. Content will be streamed via the Herald’s website and through online apps. The station will have a daily lineup and invite listener interaction through phone calls and social media.

Guess there's a Finn article in Globe, haven't seen yet
but @bostonradio tweets 4 three hr shows with
Meterperel and Royle 3-6

I still don't get the business model for online radio. How many listeners can BDC stream to at any one time? How many unique individual listeners does BDC have? And now the Herald wants to sign up talk talent for a stream of its own? It just doesn't make sense, unless it's meant to encourage people to pay for the newspaper (either print or online), but how would a bunch of alternative rock songs do that?

I wonder if the Herald might consider using a radio station as a means to cross-promote the paper....and also as a way to simulcast the internet stream.

I'm not suggesting the Herald buy a station....but perhaps some sort of LMA or lease?

via @bostonradio: Add two more rising BH media stars to the roster - Jaclyn Cashman and Hillary Chabot. "Morning Meeting With Jaclyn&Hillary"

Jaclyn Cashman is as much of a rising star as the 11th guy in the Sox bullpen. She is overly boisterous and anyone who heard the farce of a debate she conducted during the U.S. Senate race would agree with this.

It'd be quite an irony if they bought back 850 AM (after some 40 years) and managed to run it successfully, which is more than be said of Entercom of late.

Yup Herald-Traveler owned WHDH 850 from
1946 to 74 (lost Sox following yr). Some efforts
to repeal cross ownership are in works (some
stations may be grandfathered in..Bos Phoenix
may have been allowed to own WFNX 101.7 as
it was a weekly?--and there have been LMAs
where a paper could do programming on a
station they don't own ("Washington Post
Radio" on Bonneville's 1500 in DC)

If there are any thoughts of 850 dumping ESPN to run
something like B Herald radio well they have a contract
w ESPN and get paid $..and talk programming (the
Pm drive slot will be sports talk) would compete
against their own WRKO..starts 3 wks from today

It comes down to value added advertising and content.the papers can add in value added advertising, and give the content greater depth from the paper, see BDC's morning show for the local fluff between songs, I'm sure that's paid for in some way. I think it's a fantastic adition to a papers model as they move online.

Think it's pretty funny, The Herald would always dog on WFNX for being owned by a newspaper. Now here we are... #irony

Are they preparing to get Howie ?

I think they are. As soon as Howie's contact with Entercom is up, he will be the PMD host. IMHO, the sports talk will either move to evenings or be dropped entirely.

How can they afford Howie Carr? I realize he is probably looking at taking a pay cut after this contract, but the Herald couldn't come close to covering the cost of having him.
