Boston hosts on Talkers' Heavy Hundred, top 250 etc

the talkers lists are amusing...nothing more...huckabee on a week is already a top level heavy hitter and so is someone who is not actually on the air but listed in the top anyway...sorry but they have become a joke

With so many stations playing the same syndicated talk shows...are there even 250 talk hosts in the country?

Huckabee already on the Heavy Hundred? Gee, could that be why they delayed the release of this list (traditionally put out in February) until just after his show debuted? Hmmm...

I never gave Talkers Magazine much credibility in my opinion they are more about promoting Talk Radio rather than providing unbiased reporting on the format. Promoting Talk Radio is fine but I never take what they write about to seriously. It has never been clear to me what criteria is used when establishing the Heavy 100. Why is Laura Ingrham higher than Ed Shultz. Is it based on listeners or what?

The start of the list mentions their criteria including "impact, longevity, potential, ratings, recognition, talent" etc. (Longevity? Huckabee...! He has done some radio in the past, though.
But longevity is just one factor.)Note that in same bit, they mention the absence of sports
talk hosts. They said sports talk has exploded in popularity and there are so many hosts they
decided to make their own list.

The name Heavy 100 is an oxymoron, since there are, maybe, a dozen talk show hosts in the entire country who's pronouncements can actually make news or stir controvery. The other 95% would have trouble getting arrested.

The list has always been a marketing ploy by Harrison to give him and the magazine entree into the talk radio world, and a good one. You may not care that Joe Blow is the 172nd most powerful talk host in the country, bet you can bet Joe Blow cares. Heck, if he, or his syndicator, buys enough ads, sooner or later he may crack the Heavy 100.

Outside of the obvious (the Limbaughs and Hannitys and Sterns of the world) the rest are just 'pick'em space fillers, some listed because they are buddies of Harrison (does anyone actually think that Doug Stephan (#18) is a major player in radio?) or mention the magazine on their programs (IIRC, Stephan used to, and maybe still does, base programs around Talkers Magazine features.)

Regards,
TSB
