Boston News and the Public Interest

I'm still fairly new to the Boston market (12 years), so I may not know all of the obvious answers to the question I'm about to post...

But, all the talk of what (may) happen at WBZ-TV and of strong Boston-area anchors, it got me thinking: is there anyone left in Boston that makes significant strides to better the Boston area in one way or another?

For me, part of Jack Williams' appeal is not just his command of news, but also his association with projects looking to the betterment of everyday life (most notably, with his "Wednesday's Child" and with Children's Hospital). Lisa Hughes is slowly becoming associated with women's issues, and Susan Wornick is arguably the best-known for looking out for the consumer. (Liz Walker is definitely known for her passion and compassion, though now many will begin to see that in light of her faith.)

Other that that, I can't really think of TV personalities that look to advance both their career and their community. Can you?

Absolutely!

Dick Albert has a long tradition of speaking to local elementary students, and putting on demonstrations at the Boston Museum of Science. I think Harvey Leonard does this too, but certainly Dick Albert comes to mind. He also used to have a monthly show on called "Know your smarts," where he would host several public interest stories aimed at kids, well, doing the smart thing.

I believe the long retired Dave Maynard also to be in this category. For years he hosted "Community Auditions," on WBZ TV, and has been a fixture in several of the telethons that Channel 4 has aired.
