Boston Phoenix folds - WFNX.com also will shut down

Those at the Providence and Portland branches of the Phoenix should not be making long-term plans for their publications: They'll probably get the axe in a week or two.

Not necessarily. The Boston Phoenix's cost structure was dependent on national advertisers and the market for that just has totally dried up.

Portland/Providence Phoenix are small enough that their cost structure is dependent on LOCAL advertisers and supposedly those are still doing okay. Not great, but okay.

I agree that ALL newspapers are staring hard into a black financial abyss but I'm told the Portland/Providence operations won't be terribly affected by Boston's demise.

Well, they'll be AFFECTED...they're losing a major source of content; I heard the Providence outlet was hiring four reporters to help pick up the slack. If so, great for them!

I don't think they're hiring four anything. The way the model works now, they'll freelance more pieces perhaps, but I wouldn't expect anyone to be put on staff

Mindich told Boston.com they're hiring four more reporters. He could change his mind.

Print (coupled with a web presence) will continue to work in small and medium markets longer than it will in major markets for the reason previously cited: national advertisers deciding that they don't need print anymore. There are plenty of internet sources for news and opinion on national politics, global terrorism, major league sports, etc. Not so for a zoning controversy in Portland or a red-hot high school basketball team in Providence. The Patch.com web newspapers are an interesting attempt, but most are so weak editorially that it doesn't appear that they're any sort of long-term threat.

Wow - I leave town for a week, only to return and hear this news!
I agree with a previous post - they should have kept the radio station
and disbanded the newspaper, if it was no longer profitable.

Tom Taylor was noting that WFNX calls are at 99.9 in Athol (simulcast of 92.5), indeed, and the Florida station where they were parked is now WZBR. So what is the River doing with the calls other than maybe mentioning them at TOH on the Athol outlet? Nothing as far as I know. Might they do a switcheroo and perhaps rename 92.5 "WFNX" and either ditch the River or use both? "WFNX 92.5...The River." IF they did that, that is.

The http://www.wxrv.com site doesn't mention the simulcast as of yet. Radio-Locator does list WFNX as the calls at 99.9 but still lists it as The Harbor (what it was at 101.7) with a link to the old Harbor website. (Not to be confused with the Old Harbor housing project where the Bulgers grew up...) I submitted a change to them just now.

So they have the calls but what are they doing with them? (supposedly they were using a liner saying "we're 99.9 per cent WFNX" or something; but otherwise...) As for WFNX.com, a WHOIS search lists "Phoenix
65 West Commercial St
Suite 207
Portland, ME 04101"

The Phoenix is still being published in Portland and Providence and in fact I picked up a copy while in Portland yesterday.

It is said the domain name expires in 2014. Don't know if they'll renew...

As for WFNXRadio.com, someone is squatting on it...wfnx999.com and wfnx925.com haven't been registered yet.
