Boston PPMs Now Available

If you go to the radio-info home page and then click on 'Ratings', you'll find the latest PPMs for Boston. WTKK may have to stop referring to itself as "Boston's fastest-growing radio station". ERRATUM: there's listing for WSHK-AM <klaxon sound effect> WSHK is an FM station in the Seacoast area of NH. Perennial underachiever WBOS does better with the meters than it ever did with written diaries. And good-guy Bob Bittner's WJIB has slipped to the nether regions.

I'll venture to guess that's probably because Bob has likely not invested in equipment and licensing for PPM technology at WJIB, so his station is not being reported.

And, why should he purchase that expensive stuff? He doesn't need ratings to sell ads because he doesn't air them. His listeners come through and support the station with donations.

The student-run non-commercial college stations (WMBR, WZBC, WMFO, WMWM, WBRS, WRBB, etc...) will probably not be participating either (I don't count WERS as being "student-run").

The case for Bob's not investing in the encoding equipment for the PPM is even stronger than what you've stated: Were he to invest in that equipment, WJIB would show up in the ratings. If that happened, he'd run the risk of being charged exhorbitant licensing fees for the recorded "performances" of the music he plays. So he'd be cutting his own throat by "investing" in that equipment! As they say in another part of this country, "His momma didn't raise no fools."

It's true. WJIB is not encoding its signal with the PPM signal. Arbitron offers the PPM transmission at no charge. But setting it up and maintaining it could be somewhat costly. Don't need it. - I don't think 1510 is doing it either.

--Ex-Severin Headache #96.9: Jay down to 15th from 5th. Not good for him given the current
situation. What was the old baseball bit, "We finished last with ya, we can finish last without ya."
Other WTKK jocks, also bad news. Some improvements for WRKO, incl Howie. Also it says WRKO
finished 2nd (formerly 7th) evenings with "Savage and Doyle". Er, and a certain baseball team?
(Oops: the ratings are for Jan-March...but I'd imagine they'd do well with the PPMs too.)
