"BOSTON RADIO 1920-2010", the book

Donna Halper's newest book is now available. It is the most complete assemblage of radio-oriented photographs I have ever seen. Quite equally distributed from the 1920's to the 2010's. Anyone interested in the history of Boston radio should definitely have a copy in their book collection. Amazon has it, and it won't set ya back much at all. "A must-have".

Got mine at Barnes and Noble (Jibguy among those in it). Don't bother w/ Borders of course as they're going out of biz and won't get new stuff. amazon and the publisher have it but if you must have a copy right away, local booksellers of note do have it

Although they have declared bankruptcy, Borders is still operating. IIRC, they are closing 6 stores in Massachusetts as part of the bankruptcy filing but the Downtown Crossing store among others is staying open.

Just bought my copy from B&N. Awesome pictures. For someone fairly new to the biz it's a great history. Kinda bummed that WATD didn't make the cut, but it's still cool. hahaha

I'm guessing that the formula as to which stations to cover in this "Boston Radio" book is "all stations inside Rt 128 which have/had a general appeal audience and significant sized audience". Because, 890, 950, 1330, 1550, 1600 were generally not covered, although 1330 was general appeal prior to 21 years ago and 1600 prior to 45 years ago. I think there was also a brief mention of 1150. Perhaps a future book will be "eastern & central Massachusetts" centered; with georgraphical limits at Worcester, Leominster/Fitchburg, along the NH border, Attleboro, Cape Cod. But that's an immense amount of stations to cover! Would be a much bigger book, with a much bigger price tag.

I would die for a book like that. Having grown up in central Mass and worked at several stations in the region I would love a book like that. Perhaps even contribute to it in my own small way...

Halper's book got a mention in today's TRI newsletter (scroll down to "Sound Bites").

Did people notice the big ad by Glenn Beck's syndicator? We all know that some big market stations have deleted Beck's show entirely; now WXKS-AM has dropped the first hour. They must be trolling for outlets to take the place of the ones they've lost.

Premiere also previously ran a banner ad on TRI for Jim Rome, in conjunction with his 15th year of sports talk radio in "the jungle". This, incidentally, after Rome's Cleveland station cut that show by an hour...

Donna should be calling in to talk with me tomorrow (Sun 3/6) about 2 pm for a brief
interview about the book during my blues show. I will try to podcast it.

WMWM FM 91.7 Salem MA
Online at http://www.wmwmonline.com
the Juke Joint/Bob Nelson (my first show was 30 yrs ago next Sat.)

Talked to Donna for 20 min--it was great! I will podcast it later when I get home. Not the first time she's 'talked about radio' with someone named Bob!

Finally got a signed copy, read it in about an hour, heavy on pictures, not a bad read.

The thing that strikes me is that it is out of date already due to Andleman, Myers, and Vay Cay Jay now being gone from 96.9

It is really worth picking up if for no other reason than all the pictures and the comments on them. I'd love to know id any part of the station that was at Tufts still exists or if the location of the building is known.

Nice work Donna, now how about Volume 2!
