Boston Radio Dial

Hi there,

I visited Boston couple months ago. All I have to say is Boston Radio has too many rock stations.

How can Boston survive with 3 alternative rock (Radio @ 92.9, 101.7 FNX, 104.1 WBCN), an active rock (97.7/107.3 WAAF), a classic rock (100.7 WZLX), 2 classic hits (103.3 WODS, 105.7 WROR), and adult hits (93.7 MIKE FM) station.

There isn't a lot of Rhythmic music in Boston.

Wow, another anti-rock post in Boston, imagine that :)

E-Dawg, radio stations in Boston are run by people in San Antonio, New York, and Philly. They believe that since we don't have a lot of African Americans, there aren't enough people to support urban formats, because white people have no interest in rap.

And the Only Rap station in Boston, has no interest in Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan . Boston Radio Dial is f### Up !

Pardon me for a moment. There are a lot of "Ethnic" people out there who like "Rhythm" Music, Hip Hop, and R&B Music, some of those Ethnic People included Asian (Cambodian, Japanese), European (Itilian, Russian), as well as some Caucation People (old 63 year old guys do like R&B Slow Jams)
The listenners are out there.
Thank you for your time

Doesn't 94.5 beat all the rock stations in town in the 18-34 demo and 25-54 demo? If so, why not turn BCN or BOS into a R&B Hip Hop station. I am sure if they did that they would get better ratings than they are getting now.

It does. Matter fact, in the past it has even beat the oldies and A/C station in 25-54. Both Kiss 108 (CHR) and 94.5 (CHR/R) are both on top and both owned by CC. This is part of the reason for the lack of rhythmic stations...who owns what and what they have expertise in.

mot cities you look up, when looking up ratings (Radioandrecords.com) Most of the time, somewhere in the top 3, is the following

CHR
AC
Urban Rhythm (example: Jamn 94 5, HOT 97, Power 99...)

or

AC
CHR
Urban Rhythm

Urban Rhythm
AC
CHR

Most likely, I always see ratings simular like those.

Most times, those are the top 3 formats getting high ratings

In my experience, and granted I haven't been privileged to see 25-54 ratings for all THAT many stations, but usually the top three stations are:

  • The local big AM news/talker...whichever has the "traffic on the threes" or something like that. (a la WBZ)
  • The local NPR news station...if it's an all news/talk station and not a mix of news & music. (a la WBUR)
  • The local sports station, if the local teams are a big deal (WEEI/WRKO)...or it's the local CHR station if there isn't much good sports. (Kiss108)

Obviously making blanket stations across multiple markets is always doomed to inaccuracies...but I've also seen NPR News outlets regularly be in the top 3 (or at least the top 5) in the 25-54 demo for a lot of markets. It flies under the radar because Arbitron doesn't compare commercial and non-commercial in the same ratings reports (yet).

BTW, I've long believed that part of the reason for the abundance of rock in Boston is the abundance of college students in Boston. This may be a flawed argument in today's world where many students come to campus without owning a single radio or TV (the laptop handles all audio/video, and their cellphone is their alarm clock). But in the past I remember most of my collegiate friends being WFNX fans in the mid to late 1990's. They'd listen to Stern in the mornings and FNX the rest of the day.

But, Boston isn't most cities. Just as New York isn't Los Angeles and Phiily isn't Omaha and El Paso isn't Fargo. No two markets are the same...so what works in one city may not work in another. In today's corporate environment, enough research is done to know what station is going to make the most money (do you think CBS keeps WBCN an Altrnative station just to spite the "ethnic" population??) and, OBVIOUSLY, another rhythmic station is not one that is going to make enough money for any company in the market, regardless of what the top rated station in San Luis Obispo is!!
