Boston Radio Dial

Just visited Boston few weeks ago. My impression of Boston radio dial is B-O-R-I-N-G. I'm stuck flipping thru 94.5, 104.1, 106.7, and 107.9 at the most. There are lots of Talk, Sports, and Rock stations in the Boston area, very different from New York, San Francisco, or Los Angeles. Also, I have a feeling that there aren't many radio stations on the FM dial compare to these cities. Also, sports radio stations are overkilled in Boston.

Between 88.1-91.9, lots of eclectic type of music, and NPR stuff.
92.5 WXRV - The River - Local Independent AAA music station, but still boring compare to KFOG in San Francisco.
92.9 WBOS - Radio 92.9 - Good Alternative station, but overplayed 90's stuff
93.7 WEEI - Do we need an FM simulcast station of 850?
94.5 WJMN - Jams - Boring Can't decide if they want to be Urban or Rhythmic
95.3 WHRB - Good indy music, but do we need 3 classical music stations in Boston?
96.9 WTKK - Boring, Flip to music format. I prefer WBZ for information.
97.7 WAKF - Do we need a simulcast of 107.3? Flip to something else.
98.5 WBZ - Good sports station, should this belong on the AM station?
99.1 WPLM - Boring Classic Hits station, lots of gold AC music.
99.5 WCRB - Good Classical music, but Boston is an overkill classical radio station
100.7 WZLX - No comment
101.7 WFNX - Sounds dull, this station reach it peak.
102.5 WKLB - Typical Country station
103.3 WODS - Lots of deeper cut Oldies music
104.1 WBMX - dull HOT AC station, it's going thru an identity crises
105.7 WROR - Ok classic hits station
106.7 WMJX - Typical AC music station, sounding more of HOT-AC type of music lately
107.3 WAAF - Boring Acitve Rock station, do we need a simulcast of this at 97.7?
107.9 WXKS - KISS 108, sounds similar to 97.9 WNCI typical HOT-AC lean CHR that doesn't have any competition with other CHR's in the market.

We're honored to have you share your vast radio knowledge with us ignorant folk. I'm sure Clear Channel, Greater Media, Entercom, and the rest will implement your suggestions immediately. After all, you know better than us.

So...in essence...*every* radio station in Boston fails to meet your stringent standards for approval?
You know...there's a button in the upper left corner of your radio, it reads "power."
Nobody's forcing you to listen.

Not sure why people walk into someone's house and proceed to tell them how horribly decorated it is. Especially when they're using a pseudonym.

If you're strong enough to have opinions...You should be strong enough to sign your name to them.

Just my opinion...

Who's the third classical station?

Wonderful. Another civilian who will tell us all what Boston "needs",
under the cover of anonymity. The usual suspects will say the same
nonsense they always say. The same individual, with many thousands
of posts on this board will add yet another post, as he must always
get in the last word in every single thread. (with very little of substance
to add to any discussion). Where are the moderators?

I see, said the blind man as he picked up his hammer and saw.

Boston radio is quite interesting. Aircheck traders are enthusiastic about it. I've gone to other places where I couldn't find much of interest on the dial, but not here. College radio (as you say, and not only 88.1-91.9--see Brandeis, Northeastern, Harvard), talk shows, sports (2 very strong contenders). Legends of radio have been here, and some still are among us (read the excellent book by Professor Halper).

>>compare to those cities
>>this station reach it peak

Great grammar. ("Young man, are your parents home? I have some encyclopedias they may be interested in."..."They was in before, but they is out now."..."They was in! They is out! Where's your grammar?"..."Out in the kitchen making cookies.")

Yes we do need a simulcast of 850. Actually it pretty much is 93.7 WEEI, which is simulcast on _AM 850_.

>>Do we need simulcast of 107.3

Yes, we do, as the signal of the profitable WAAF has trouble reaching Boston.

>>should this belong on the AM station?

No, because WBZ does fine with news and talk. Before, the Exciting Hockey Games interrupted some fine political
talk. Now you can put the B's and Pats on 98.5 and keep great news and talk on 1030.

Any critiques of AM btw? WRKO, WBZ, WJIB, ethnic stations, stations like WCAP or WNBP, prog talk WWZN? Comments?

Actually, I find Boston to be one of the more interesting markets for radio. Lots of variety and local personalities. Same with Chicago and San Francisco. I would take Boston radio over NYC radio any day...4 news talk stations, 3 urban stations, 2 urban AC's, 4 CHR's, no new rock, country, little local talk radio

I agree. A great noncommercial end of the dial with no K-Love or other Godcaster drop-ins, full-time classical and country stations, two sports talkers in a sports-obsessed city, and in the 'burbs you've got WBOQ and WATD with their unusual musical mixes. Only one CHR is unusual for a major market and there's not much for the African-American listener musically, especially in genres other than hip-hop and teen-oriented urban, but otherwise it's a good selection of formats.

The Boston market IS one of the better radio markets in the country. And I've had many opportunities to visit some of the largest radio markets around the country (NYC, LA, Chicago, Detroit. DC, Orlando, Phoenix and many others). Every single market has something unique about them. Boston, being one of the earliest cities to embrace radio back in the 1920's, also was the place for many innovations that have made radio what it is today around the country. I find that Boston radio has more diversity and selections of music and talk per capita than New York and LA have. Chicago and San Francisco are pretty much up there as well with some really great radio choices to listen to. But when you come right down to it, it's a matter of taste. And I have to admit, I am somewhat biased about Boston radio, having lived here all of my life. It's kind of like.... traveling. I've visited many places around the country. And like the saying goes...... "nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there". Sure, there are (and have been) some really stupid gimmicks and fly-by-night ideas on Boston radio, as they are in many other markets around the country. But, I would not want live anywhere else than Boston. And Boston radio is really bigger and better than many other markets twice its' size. (IMHO) :)

Personally I think that the Boston market has gotten too comfortable. It needs somewhat of a shake up. Back in the 90's, it was really exciting seeing all of the competition. Now it just seems ho hum instead.

Of course the radio dial is very different from New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles...Boston is very different than NYC, SF or LA!! And your opinion of sports overkill differs vastly from a majority of the rabid sports fans in this city! ;)

Hey 4CX1000A, Paul does sign his name to his posts. Even if you do not know him by his handle, he has a link to his website in his signature to you can figure out who he is. He's also a Super Genius, so I've read. ;D

So Mr. e-dawg, on a visit, mind you, listened to, and rated, all of those radio stations. I don't know where Mr. e-dawg lives, but I wish he would move here. We could use someone with his superior intelligence and talent. Don't you think?

I wonder what else he did on his visit to Boston.

Watched Boston TV, I'd imagine.

I think e-dawg is from Portland OR. Good sports town?
MLB: No team
NFL: No team
NHL: No team
NBA: One team, though the league may not play this year.
Wonder how their sports radio sounds? Also, I don't think Portland has their own board on here.
We do, and it's one of the more active ones. I guess we're boring.

Actually one unincorporated town near Portland is definitely Boring

If you're talking about me, good sir, I think I have a lot of substance and I seem to remember making many posts in which I said pirate radio is bad because not only is it breaking the law, but these
folks could instead take their business to stations like WLYN. I fully support legal stations like
yours serving the community in this way. I hope you do well.

But don't listen to me, I'm a worthless imbecile.

Geez, the poster "dissin" Boston as a "visitor" sure says "we" alot in their post
