Boston radio in Springfield MA?

I noticed that WAAF showed up in the most recent 12+ numbers. Is that likely to be the case in the future given all the signal changes that they have been making?

Also, are other Boston stations audible in Spingfield? Which ones and how well?

Here's my experience with Boston/Worcester/Providence area stations during normal conditions. I'm about 8 miles west of Springfield:

WGBH 89.7 - Moderate to strong signal most times.

WSRS 96.1 - Consistently strong.

WTKK 96.9 - Usually a moderate signal.

WBMX 98.5 - Usually a moderate to strong signal.

WORC 98.9 - Usually a moderate signal.

WSKO 99.7 - Providence - Usually a weak to moderate signal.

WNYN 99.9 - Consistently strong.

"The Pike" 100.1 - Weak to moderate signal.

WZLX 100.7 - Usually very weak, often with bleed over from Hartford's 100.5.

WWBB 101.5 - Providence - Usually very weak, but ocasionally a moderate signal.

WCRB 102.5 - Consistently a moderate signal.

WODS 103.3 - Used to receive moderate to strong until low power WXOJ signed on in Northampton. :(

WXLO 104.5 - Usually weak to moderate signal.

WROR 105.7 - Usually weak signal.

WMJX 106.7 - Usually weak with bleed over from Hartford's 106.9.

WAAF 107.3 - Consistently strong (when they transmit from Paxton).

WXKS 107.9 - Usually very, very weak, if audible at all.

If I didn't mention a station, then I can usually find no trace of the signal. Times of tropo conditions are another story, however.

I'm curious, What about Hartford stations?
I noticed WTIC AM doesn't show up in the 12+, but WTIC FM shows up.

What Hartford market stations are heard in Springfield?
(sorry, I know that's not a Boston question, but there isn't a MA board).

Just about all Hartford stations send strong signals into Springfield, and north up the Connecticut River Valley towards Northampton and even Greenfield in some instances. WKCI 101.3, a New Haven market station comes in very strong, but the few other New Haven stations don't seem to make it this far north. Interestingly, I can often pick up some central and eastern Long Island, NY and New London, CT stations thanks to the signals shooting up the river valley from Connecticut. Conversely, some of the Keene and Brattleboro stations shoot strongly south down the valley.

Daytime AM reception of WTIC-AM is usually pretty good here. Hartford's WDRC-AM is less reliable. As to why WTIC-AM doesn't show up in the books, I would guess it is due to strong local loyality to Springfield's WHYN-AM in particular.

Thanks, but I'm not sure you answered my question.
Do these stations penetrate Springfield?
How well?

I can confirm radioken's statement that they all penetrate the Springfield area.

They all come in fairly well, if you scan your car radio, they all show up. They probably sound equal or better to listening to Providence stations in the Boston suburbs.

And from the AM dial, WBZ-1030 should have a good signal both day and night in the Springfield area.

For the Hartford stations in Springfield, I always have the best results with WTIC-FM 96.5 and WCCC-FM 106.9, with the advantage of having their transmitters in Avon and West Hartford, respectively, instead of to the south-southwest in Meriden. As for the stations to the east of greater Springfield, I always had fair results with WAAF-FM with my Sony Walkman along I-91 between Springfield and Greenfield.

Most of the Hartford Class B FMs have their 60dbu contours near or over the Springfield area, so there isn't much issue picking them up. (The exception is WPHH, who's directional pattern really effects their signal in some areas).

WKCI is also rather clear and strong, thanks to the clear frequency they have.
WPLR would be clearer if WLZX was not on 99.3.
WYBC is rather weak until you get to south facing areas like Rte 187 in Agawam or 10/202 in Southwick.

WESU 88.1 is fairly consistant around here.
WJMJ 88.9 is nice and strong, as clear as most of the "West Peak" stations.
WWUH 91.3 is good but not 'strong' per-se.
WHUS 91.7 is about the same.

W248AB 97.5 , the 10 watt translator on Bolton Notch comes in amazingly well in the Springfield area.

WEBE 107.9 comes in OK, but fights with WXKS out of Boston depending on where you travel.

Thanks everyone for all the information. It sounds like the Springfield market gets a lot of variety thanks to where it is located! Right now, I live out here in Lubbock TX, and the closest markets are Amarillo and Lubbock, each of which are over 100 miles away! And these aren't exactly top 100 markets either...

Uh, what do you mean "should?"
Do you know if they do?

Joseph_Gallant is correct. I can confirm WBZ-AM sends a strong daytime signal west into Springfield.

WBZ began its broadcast life IN Springfield in 1921!

it does! I have listened to it many times on my way to work, and on my way home (either 11:30pm or 1:30 am).
