Boston Radio Ratings Holiday 2021

Christmas music #1
WBZ FM #2
Now that the Pats are done, will BZ stay strong ?

Kiss 108 under 5

WBGB with a nice gain

WJMN with a little bump up.

WWBX crashes for some reason

I'm sure that boring Adele record did Kiss and Mix no favors. I've tuned out everytime it came on.

Sports Hub will probably dip a little bit with the Patriots out, but they always manage to keep things interesting on air

anyone else notice Emerson , Costa Eagle, and WJDA showing up in the published ratings?

I thought you had to be a paying client to get those numbers, as useless as the 6+ ones that are published.

Also add the WMJX stream onto the OTA numbers and they are even more impressive.

WEEI FM must have some serious issues... ya again the 6+ means crap, but they are below WRKO ...cheese and crackers!

Anyone got any 18 to 34 numbers for them ?

You don't like "Easy on Me" from Adele? It's terrific! 231 million views on You Tube.

As for the Boston ratings, remember that Christmas listening impacts most stations, except the harder-edged rock stations, sports stations and stations aimed at African American and Hispanic listeners. Most Classic Hits, Hot AC, Country, Classic Rock and News/Talk stations see a drop when the AC station is playing holiday tunes. If WMJX has double digit ratings, those listeners have to come from somewhere.

Stations losing ratings from December include WBZ-AM, WROR, WXKS-FM, WZLX, WRKO and WKLB. Surprisingly WBGB went up. And as said above, WWBX had a really bad ratings period.

Why is WEEI-FM underperforming? Sure, WBZ-FM is the home of the Patriots. But that doesn't explain such a giant gap between the two sports stations. Even if the Pats are on 98.5, the hosts on WEEI-FM are still talking about them. And in the summer when WEEI-FM is the home of the Red Sox, WBZ-FM still is equal or slightly ahead of WEEI-FM. This year WBZ-FM became one of the top 10 stations in the United States in terms of revenue. WEEI-FM never did that.

2021 was a comeback year for WJMN.

iHM did a good job righting that ship.

I agree that CHR/Pop is in a bad state. That is a seemingly rudderless format at the moment.

While we're at it, why does WKLB perform better than WBWL? They both play the same songs and the DJs talk about the same things?

The personalities at WBZ-FM connect better with the overall audience than the personalities at WEEI-FM. With the morning shows, it just shows that Audacy's thought of combining Hill's WAAF audience with the incumbent WEEI-FM morning audience didn't put a dent in Toucher & Rich. The problem is the image that WEEI-FM has. It's more regarded as "Dad's" station. The history of statements made on WEEI (back in the AM850 days) doesn't help either. Dennis and Callahan came off as two old racists. Then Kirk Minihane came across as a dullard with mental health issues. Michael Holly has his critics, although I prefer him over afternoons on WBZ-FM. Dale Arnald was considered old as was Glenn Ordway (again, despite my preference of them over Felger and Maz).

It's about how the brand and personalities relate to the audience. WEEI-FM just doesn't connect as much as WBZ-FM.

WKLB has a better signal that reaches more of the market, and they do a better job of local interaction.

Musically, they're not exactly the same songs. Comparing playlists, KLB has a tighter playlist of currents and recurrents. They play their heavy songs more frequently. The Bull plays more new releases. As far as DJs, KLB is all local, while The Bull has syndicated mornings and overnights.

I know. It was sarcasm, because the post I quote basically asked why WBZ does better than WEEI, when it essentially is the same exact thing outside game coverage.

I know. It was sarcasm, because the post I quote basically asked why WBZ does better than WEEI, when it essentially is the same exact thing outside game coverage. So, I used WKLB and WBWL as an equal example, meaning that we could ask that question about all competing stations.

WERS Emerson has been in the published ratings for at least a few years. They are a professionally managed rather than a student managed college station. They probably are a paying Nielsen client. They seem to be very intentional of their status as, despite being listed as "variety", effectively a rock-based AAA station (except for a four-hour nighttime R&B show and weekend specialty shows). They are not "freeform", and are no longer extremely diversely block programmed, like most completely student-run college stations.

Their main competition would be AAA-formatted 92.5 WXRV "The River", which may skew a little bit older and a bit less "edgy" (and has some signal problems in some metro-Boston areas despite their boosters, where WERS is loud and clear).
