Boston Radio Ratings July 2021

WROR stilll # 1

WKLB moves into a tie with Kiss for #2.

WZRM with a nice showing.

It is great to see that the two heritage AM stations are continuing to perform well with the latest ratings from ages 6 and up. WBZ held on to the 5th most popular radio station and WRKO remains the 9th most popular radio station. There are very few top markets that can boast two AMs in the top 10. WBZ continues to excel as the station to turn to for news, weather, traffic and sports and WRKO is the station to turn to for talk with great hosts Jeff, Grace and Howie during the day.

9.1 for WROR, when was the last time a station had that high of a share?

6.1 for WKLB, is this the highest share (on paper anyway) that they ever had?

Why is WMJX continuing to be trending downward?

WBGB seems to have taken rhe biggest hit (2.9-2.). It seems as if WROR took most of those listeners.)

Right now there is only a (0.3) difference between WJMN and WZRM, despite the laters imferior signal. Will they eventually jump ahead of Jam'n?

Yes, despite the past loathing of iHeartMedia, they really do seem to know what they are doing!

Interesting to see the Kiss 108 drop after Marty’s on air fit and poor treatment of his coworker. I wonder if there has been a drop during the mornings.

These stations are still an uncertain bet for the future if they're not attracting under-55 listeners and advertisers continue to avoid spending to reach boomers and older. At some point, the 6+ numbers will represent thousands of people that no advertiser wants to try to sell anything to, and the stations will wither and die.

Producer sidekick Bex, who has since taken a
job in Philly
>>In an audio excerpt, posted by Boston Radio Watch and then retweeted by a Kiss 108 listener, you can hear Matt calling out Bex on air over his claim that she had failed to post the audio of the show and did not inform him of that decision.

RadioOnline:"Q102/Philadelphia announced today that Rebekah "Bex" Maroun will join Program Director and on-air talent "Buster" Satterfield on "Bex and Buster," effective July 5."

I wonder how much of this can be attributed to the shifting demographics of radio listening or PPM bias. My experience cannot represent my entire generation (older millenials/mid-thirties), but I do not know a single person who listens to WRKO. I wonder if WRKO picked up a heavy meter or two over the last year and tilted the scale. Not to discredit iHeart though--they clearly know how to maximize their stations for ratings.

I'd be curious to see a breakdown of WRKO by age as well as the market's distribution of meters, but I imagine that's all private.

It is my thinking the reason why iHeartMedia has invested so heavily into AM radio, is hoping that the FCC will eventually all AM frequencies to be to all digital. When/if that happens, then inferior AM audio quality disappears, thus giving them a goldmine!

I see WRKO is dropping like a stone with the Kuhner anchor around their neck. Another couple of months and they'll be right back in their 2.7-3.2 historical range.

Radio Broadcasting is a business. Success is measured by earnings and profit. WRKO bills and makes a fraction of what it achieved when it was a first class outlet. Today it is a shell of its former self. So being number 9 6plus makes them the biggest banana in the strawberry patch.

Long are the days of Mike & Janet, Gene Burns, Jerry Williams, whoever did evenings, and Larry King!

Did WRKO appeal to more listeners in the "money demo" back then, or was it the same 55+ crowd listening but ad agencies didn't care as much? Seems the attitude that it's not worth spending on 55+ has become carved-in-stone gospel with advertising types in recent years. Exactly,h ow long has that been the case?

I would presume that the station was a huge money maker, with it consistently being #1 in the Arbritron ratings and all back then!

Again, that all depends on whether younger people were listening back then or whether "conventional wisdom" in the advertising community about older listeners hadn't metastasized and calcified yet into what it has become today.

KLB had much higher shares before WBWL

Jerry Williams, David Brudnoy and believe it or not Dick Syatt had a 35+ audience. Being the flagship for the Celtics during the Bird era, BC football during the Flutie era and the Red Sox made the station boatloads of cash.

Phhhhhhhhhhhfffff!
I can listen to Crazy Kuhner for about 20 minutes. I like the Gordon Deal news program RKO runs from 5a to 6a so I will leave RKO on to see what the K Man is outraged about now. Kuhner is so far removed from reality it isn't funny anymore. On Monday, he called John Kerry Mr. Anti Climate Change. During a live read for Mr. Pillows towels he called them the most non absorbent towels he has ever used. He loves them so much he bought a set for Dr. Grace, a set for his son who is about 10 and his daughter who is about 8.. Such a high standard of living. Everyone has their own set of towels. Later he said the members of the NY Assembly up in Albany were happy to see Cuomo go. Well at least he doesn't say in Cape Cod or on Chestnut Hill as often as he used to.
