Boston Radio Ratings March 2020.

WUMB is non-commercial listener supported. As long as the donations still come in at fundraising pledge time, and they are from what I hear, they're all set.

I understand all that. When people here make comments about the ratings at various commercial stations, they don't have access to the revenues at those stations. All they're working off are the 6+ published numbers. So the fact is that as long as the revenues still come in for WODS, it really doesn't matter what the 6+ numbers say. It might surprise people that sometimes a station can have great ratings and bad revenues, and vice versa.

Listed as WBZU--they are now WKVB I believe--the former WAAF got half again as many listeners as the previous period; but they are listener supported and ratings may not matter as much as mission. (Don't believe they run ads of course.)

>>WROR’s HD2 has been off the air for at least a few weeks.

Checked out my HD radio portable last night.
That does seem to be the only absence.I was
even getting the HD2 (news talk?) and HD3 (oldies--WMVX?) of WNNW's FM translator at
102.9 in Lawrence area (reaching Beverly)..WKVB on 100.7 HD3...
etc

They did it with two district formats though covering the same era in decades. WBOS airs much harder-edged rock than WROR with little crossover between the two stations.

Before WBOS flipped to this classic hard rock format, there was a similar format on WROR HD2 called “The Bone” for a few years. It was removed around the time of the WBOS flip, and replaced with the “Men from Maine” channel, rebroadcasting those old Loren & Wally bits in a loop.

That’s now gone, WROR’s HD2 has been off the air for at least a few weeks.

The Bone is sorely missed... It was programmed by a fellow Rush fan, so there was pretty much one song per hour! The rest of the playlist was pretty excellent too. It's a shame that streaming HD2 stations is rather cost-prohibitive. Always felt that pushing for a streaming audience for the better HD2s gave them a viability that they don't have in broadcast, for obvious reasons.

I was told that the source for K-Love on 100.7 HD3 is not WKVB, it’s WUBG, but I haven’t listened to hear the ID’s.

Whatever advertisers they still have.

WODS was transitioning away from the use of the word Oldies in their promotional stuff, I forget exactly what they were using when they flipped in 2012, but there had been no use of the "oldies" moniker in a few years at this point.

If you look at what WODS would has transitioned to over the last 8 years as the P1 listeners birth year migrated ( "oldies is a dying demographic" ) all you have to do is look at the former CBS, now Beasley WRBQ in Tampa where Paula Street landed in 2013 ( she was beached in September 2019 when Beasley dumped a lot of their mid day talent company wide)

WRBQ slowly slid their playlist towards the 80's with some 70's tossed in occasionally... probably nothing before the disco era, no Golden Oldies, no British invasion artists.

Looking at their play list for the last few hours they have spun everything from Tom Petty and Madonna, to Green Day and Adele.

Last successful commercial classical station?
WFLN in Philly?

Hardly. That station was gone by 1997. WGMS in Washington was still full power commercial classical to 2007. It even outlasted WCRB. WGMS was also still getting great ratings into its final days. But the demographics were awful, and the station became the FM signal for WTOP. The classical format went to non-com WETA, and they still get great ratings today.

That's the problem, the demographics. Classical music isn't easy to get into as a younger person. It's complex music, and most pieces are at least four times longer than the average popular song, sometimes much much longer. I was brought up with it, but never started to appreciate it until I got well into my 50s and current popular styles had passed me by. Now it's more than half of what I listen to, and I learn something new every day. I just wonder what its long-term future is on radio in this country, given that the style originated and was cultivated in the royal courts of Europe, far from the origins of the more rhythmic musical genres that have been on the ascendancy in recent decades. It's easier, I think, for someone who loved the Beatles or Pink Floyd as a younger person to transition to classical in his later years than one whose musical foundations were laid by Snoop Dogg or even Prince.

Until you learn how much of a gangsta Brahms was. He did more drugs than Snoop. Berlioz loved opium.
