There are a few changes for this time period. WHIL 1430/107.9 did not go to beautiful music WWEL until early December, 1972. WWEL-FM did not go Stereo until January, 1973.

Unfortunately, I never got the chance to hear a true Quad receiver in those days. They were out of the range of what I could pay for a receiver when I was in high school (kind of like IBOC receivers now).

I only remember that the Quad stations sounded a little funny in regular stereo due to the phase errors introduced (the old analog Quad systems worked by sending intentionally out-of-phase audio portions to the rear speakers), and therefore they suffered from significant audio loss due to phase cancellation when listening in mono.

If I recall correctly, the call letters on this station were WRSR. It was licensed in '72, and shut down sometime around 1982.

There was a point in the late 70s where I do remember a huge amount of stations running beautiful music at the same time, among them:

WJIB 96.9
WHUE 100.7
WWEL-FM 107.9 *
WWEL 1430 *
WSSH 99.5
WHUE (AM) 1150
maybe even 94.5? and others? (I might be remembering when 94.5 was beautiful
but they later went to rock as WCOZ)

*--can't remember if this was before or after the switch to "Kiss 108"--1/15/79?; if it was after, then remove those two. Anyway there was definitely a point where there
were indeed that many stations playing beautiful music. And maybe even
WPLM-FM was beautiful music, too, but I think they were big band instead

Update: research via the profiles on bostonradio.org said that WHUE-FM
and WHUE (AM) ran beautiful music, but didn't simulcast, and they had
that format from 1/1/79 till 1984. So WHUE took up elevator music a couple
weeks before WWEL abandoned it?

You guys have great memories!!! Peter...I won\'t contest the WHIL into WWEL, change, but 103.3-WEEI-FM, was still doing the \"Young Sound\" Rock/Top 40 format, through September, 1972. As a matter of fact, they dumped \"The Young Sound\" and flipped to that MOR/Soft Rock format, that you mentioned, on October 1, 1972. I was a regular listener of WEEI-FM, and Dick Provo, (The Young Sound) and was pissed off enough, to call them, at the time of the format change....

Back in those days, "beautiful music" seemed to be the default format for many stations. Some, like WBOS AM-FM ("The Music Theatre Stations" on 1600 and 92.9)and the original WJIB on 96.9 were seriously programmed, promoted and imaged, while scores of other stations simply got a BM package of some sort and threw it out there. I suppose it was cheap and easy, there was always some store business, and the GMs and owners personally liked it.
