Boston radio shows you miss

Several shows(and stations) I miss:

Dale Dorman on WRKO and Kiss-108! Hi, Mom!

Jess Cain, Jerry Williams, the Sports Huddle.

The Dr. Demento Show and Casey Kasem's AT 40.

Bud Ballou, Dick Summer's "The Loving Touch" and King Arthur Knight-his royal majesty-on WMEX.

I definitely miss Dr. David Brudnoy and Jerry Williams.

A Spanish show called "La Voz Continental" on WUNR with Tony Jay, and an Italian show on that same station "Enrico e Carla." Buona Scouto!

Wolfman Jack is someone I miss as well as Jim Grant's "Rock And Roll Roots." I remember he did a 30 hour Christmas show live in 1978 on the old WROR-FM at 98.5.

"Solid Gold Saturday Night" with Dick Bartley. I had to tune into a station in Providence to hear that live, since WROR had "Saturday Night Live At The Oldies" in the 7-midnight time slot and aired it on tape delay from midnight to dawn.

"The National Album Countdown with Humble Harv" on WCAV-FM in Brockton.

"The Sound Of Erin" on WBOS and WNTN! John Curran, Henry Varian, Sporting Pat Toohig & Bernie McCarthy really kept the Irish community of Eastern New England entertained and informed about what was going on.

The John Latchford Show on WRYT(later WROL). Like him or hate him, he pioneered(along with Tommy Shields) Irish music on the radio here in Boston! No wonder it's the Irish capital of America.

And I miss, most of all, WBZ's "Christmas Gift To You," as well as WJIB's "Christmas Festival Of Music." Those 30+ hours of holiday music really made the Christmas celebration a lot more festive. Not like the 24/7 radio stations that play the same old crap every Christmas. If you want real variety, you gotta go to the 'Net!

And I miss WCOP, WJIB-FM, WVBF, WBCN, WCRB, WLYN-FM, WCAS, WHUE-AM & FM, WWEL, WHIL, WLKW, the old WEEI, the Big 68, WMEX 1510, WBVD in Danvers(Golden Memories 1570), WTTK, the old WHDH, and so many more.

And I miss the old "daytimers," who used to sign off at night with frivilous fanfare. WCAS's various sundown montages, Bill Porter signing off WRYT and WROL with the national anthem, WLKW's sign off with Bert Kamperfert's "Wonderland By Night," and Bob Bittner's dramatic sign-off of WNTN to the tune of the 2001 theme. And just as the anthem ended, he'd shout "WNTN Newton!"

One show I don't miss: WHDH's Talking Sex program with Dr. Joseph Helfgot and Socialogist Jennier Drew! I couldn't stand it! (It was the One in Ten of the 1980s.) And I can't stand WFNX's program "One In Ten" at all. Don't take it personally; I don't hate gays or lesbians. I just hate their lifestyle and political agenda.

Here's one that I suspect is remembered ONLY by me (and nobody else--anywhere--except _possibly_ the guy who hosted the show, and who, by now, may no longer even remember that he did it): Jonathan Schwartz's evening program in the early '60s on WNAC AM 680. Jonathan went on to fame at WNEW (AM) in New York, where he became the de-facto curator of Frank Sinatra material. I think he also hosted the station's legendary "Make-Believe Ballroom" for a while. However, during his couple of years in Boston, early in his career, he displayed a tremendous knowledge of and sensitivity for what a lot of people refer to as The Great American Songbook. (Remember, Jonathan is the son of composer Arthur Schwartz.) He also proved himself to be a raconteur par excellence. Does anyone know whether Jonathan's weekend program at public radio WNYC (AM) 820 in New York City is still on the air?

"It's not YOU I hate...just everything about you....and quit asking for rights!"

What would it be like if someone said: "I don't hate heterosexuals...just their lifestyle and their politics.

what "lifestyle"? There's no one set gay "lifestyle." Just like there's no one set heterosexual or bisexual "lifestyle." They just ARE that way. And no one was forcing you to listen. "One In Ten" was no "Gender Talk," though...

Great topic !! :D
Johnny Most calling the Celtics..

Eddie, Mark, and Jim and the Sunday Night Sports Huddle on "Radio Free WHDH !!"
Clif and Claf on WITS

....and this brings me to my contribution to this thread:

The Gay Dating Show w/ Terrence Fox. WUNR "Super 16". Early 90s. Probably leased. The host was hilariously creepy.

almost forgot ... the Yankee Kitchen Baking Show live from the Parker House -WROL 950. I was just a kid but the way the host dragged his S's as he wrote down the caller's recipe was hypnotizing

Morgan White Jr's Talking Trivia
Jerry Williams, Gene Burns, Charles Laquidara--esp Mishegas segment, even dare I say Bittner's Let's Talk

WMBR's The Flame Sessions ... so damn hilarious. I think I have two of the shows on tape - the last one and the existential nothingness show. I would love to get some of those old shows and listen to them again.

Now I have a couple of those tapes too, I was a regular caller to the show! :)

I also say Gene Burns.

Neil Chayet "looking at the law"

90's "On Computers" with Gina Smith and Leo Leporte

Dr. Demento in his heyday.

Funny Business on WRKO.

Avil Nelson

Norm Nathan

Bob Ralleih

Mike and Janet

Bruce Williams

Delilah when she was local.

Norm Nathan

Bob Raleigh (spelling corrected)

I always liked the way Neil pronounced the name of his show.
Dr. Demento just ended his syndicated show
Norm was great--so soothing for late nights
on the other hand, I never liked Bob Raleigh. He shot from the hip too much and sounded ignorant a good percentage of the time.

Oh, yeah! I remember Bobby G. and "Thin Man" holding court on Super 16 from 11:45 p.m. until 4 a.m. each Monday through Saturday night. And how about The Ken Mayer Show on WUNR at midnight? He played some great comedy, talked to people on the phone and played up some great sponsors.

The week after he died, I heard the announcer on WUNR say, "Owing to the death of its host, the Ken Mayer show will not be heard."

And oh, do I miss Joy Berger and Jody Fields with "The Ruach Hour" every Tuesday night.
"From darkness into light...from slavery into freedom they came...and from these people came a girl...bent on putting Joy in Your Life!" It was such a joy.

One guy I don't miss is Carlos, the "computer who thinks he's human!"

And I definitely don't miss Mark Parenteau! After the trouble he got into, I'm sorry but he's personna non grata in my list!

The host was Gus Saunders, I believe. Speaking or WROL, you can add Sherm Feller to the list for me. He had an afternoon show there in the mid 70's.

LOL!!! I used to listen to Ken's show. There was some funny comedy in between the commercial spots that he read that seemed to take up about 2/3 of the show. "You know the spot..." An unforgettable voice, too.
