Boston radio shows you miss

Great topic...but - growing up in Fall River, Providence was my radio listening ground...so if I might detour down Rte 95 for a moment:

1. Jimmy Gray - WPRO FM Mornings. (Actually - all of PRO FM throughout the 70's and 80's - but Jimmy was one of those guys who made me want to do radio as a youngin.)
2. Salty Brine and Larry Kruger - WPRO AM Mornings. My foster parents old Nova only had an AM radio (with 8 track built in) so the car radio was ALWAYS tuned to 63-WPRO. (I believe "Operation Snowball" is still used in the wintertime on WPRO.)
3. Bud Toevs - WPRO News guy. All I can say is: "What a set of pipes!

Then there was the "battle" for a few years between PRO FM and JB 105 that made for fun radio listening as well.

Thanks again for the great topic!

How about WBOS-FM's "Disco 93" formet that was on the air in the late 1970s?! That was a radio station! Playing all your favorite disco songs...until Kiss 108 took over WWEL's frequency of 107.9, then the end was come.
Or how about "La Voz Continental" on WUNR-AM with Tony Jay? Or their public affairs programs?
"Randolph Youths Speak Out"
"Al Benjamin: Up and Down Beacon Hill"
"St. Anthony Novena from St. Leonard's Church"
"The Ruach Hour with Joy Berger" (Grace Unto Thee!)
"Msgr. Vincent Mackay and the Miraculous Medal Novena from St. Cecilia's Church"
And I miss "Enrico e Carla," their Italian program.
How about "Atardecer Romantico" with Juaquin Suner? "Para los almas enamoradas."
And how about Georgie Rosario's "Radio Magica 160," which aired every week night. I taped a Valentine's Day show in 1985, and it was spectacular!
And what about the beautiful music stations? Especially their Christmas shows!

I ESPECIALLY MISS THE WWEL, WJIB AND WHUE Christmas Festival Of Music programs that they did each Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! Hours of uninterrupted Christmas music and traditional hymns.
I especially liked WJIB's program, which was sponsored by BayBank(forerunner of Bank of America) and the special introductions by its chairman Bill Crozier, Jr. And those lovely messages from the BayBank employees. They were very special.

Roy Fox overnights on WMEX in 1973

Absolutely. And the Foxy Lady makes two. They also had a version of the Dan Donovan, whose real name escapes me, who did well in that spot.

And if you said Scott Wallace in morning drive on WMEX at around the same era, then in the immortal words of Jim Woods "You win a Volare"

Of course winning Volares meant the WMEX Home Run Inning which came to a sudden end one Independence Day (1977)

RED SOX 5TH: Yastrzemski singled; Fisk forced Yastrzemski (third
to second); Scott homered [Fisk scored]; Hobson grounded out
(shortstop to first); Helms made an out to third; 2 R, 2 H, 0 E,
0 LOB. Blue Jays 2, Red Sox 2.

RED SOX 6TH: Dillard made an out to second; Burleson flied out
to right; Lynn homered; Rice singled; Yastrzemski grounded out
(second to first); 1 R, 2 H, 0 E, 1 LOB. Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 3.

RED SOX 7TH: Fisk walked; Scott grounded into a
double play (second to shortstop to first) [Fisk out at second];
Hobson homered; CARBO BATTED FOR HELMS; Carbo homered; DOYLE
BATTED FOR DILLARD; Doyle flied out to center; 2 R, 2 H, 0 E, 0
LOB. Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 5.

RED SOX 8TH:=; Burleson made an
out to shortstop; Lynn homered; Rice homered; WILLIS REPLACED
HARTENSTEIN (PITCHING); Yastrzemski homered; Fisk grounded out
(pitcher to first); Scott homered; JOHNSON REPLACED WILLIS
(PITCHING); Hobson singled; Carbo walked [Hobson to second];
Doyle struck out; 4 R, 5 H, 0 E, 2 LOB. Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 9.

The Home Run Inning was damaged badly in June of 1977.

Martin used to pout that he never got a chance to do one so on June 17, 1977 they gave Ned his wish and made the FIRST inning the Home Run Inning. Yankees were starting Catfish Hunter - what could go wrong? ;D

RED SOX 1ST: Burleson homered; Lynn homered; into Red Sox
bullpen; Rice struck out; Yastrzemski popped to shortstop;
Fisk homered; Scott homered; CLAY REPLACED HUNTER (PITCHING);
Carbo flied out to center; 4 R, 4 H, 0 E, 0 LOB. Yankees 0, Red
Sox 4.

Woods was in hysterics as the inning unfolded.

To show you how things used to be, I take you back 45 years to late night Sunday/early morning Monday

You only had 2 local signals on the air at Midnight on AM

Norm Nathan on WHDH 850 and Ken Mayer on WBOS/WUNR-AM 1600 - everybody else was off for maintenance.

WO9-8989 will never be forgotten. It was a show done out of the basement of Ken's house and yet untold thousands listened.
