BOSTON RED SOX GIVING WRKO/ENTERCOM - ONE LAST CHANCE

Emily Rooney on Beat The Press wondered out loud if The Boston Red Sox were concerned about the quality or lack thereof on Entercom's WRKO. The Red Sox organization may have read the riot act to the powers that be at Entercom/WRKO that would not be associated with a flagship affiliate that maintains such low standards.

Bet there is an "escape clause" in the contract the Red Sox signed with WRKO. Wonder if they will exercise it if they believe it is hurting their corporate image.

Pressuring their advertisers - especially those advertisers who sponsor The Red Sox - and keeping the Sox front office aware of the racism, gay bashing and high school bathroom language that is rife - not only at RKO, but throughout Entercom, could force the Red Sox have second thoughts. The Sox, like Entercom, are a corporation and care mostly about money. The public at large doesn't take radio as serious as we do.

Re-read your last sentence. An advertiser boycott will achieve approximately nothing. The racism, gay-bashing and high school bathroom language have existed for over ten years on WEEI, and I don't see the Red Sox constantly threatening to move the games elsewhere.

I didn't see Beat the Press, but if that's what Emily Rooney said, she's more clueless than I thought.

Who's to say the Red Sox don't enjoy the type of stuff heard on 'RKO? I haven't heard any of the owners speak about it. The Sox aren't giving Entercom any "chance," there's a signed deal, they've worked with each other for years, even with the occasional lovers' quarrels between them.

The bigger question is will they keep Joe and Jerry on the broadcast next year, or will 'RKO put John and Howie in the booth?

Let me get this straight: Emily Rooney has been a broadcast professional for decades on major-market, network, and Public TV...but a person who doesn't deign to use his real name calls HER clueless?

She's been a failure her entire career, that's why she's hosting a PBS TV show in market 11

True......... you didnt hear a peep out of the Sox during the whole Metco thing, maybe because that didnt happen DURING the season?. By making noise about giving the station one more chance they are now covered in case any of their season ticket holders complains which I doubt would ever happen, again if you're a season ticket holder you're prbably used to that sports culture which is alpha male central. The numbers at Fenway will not diminish and they will continue to make money hand over fist. You're right they are not going anywhere, they did not go to BOS or BCn when they had voiced a desire to be on fm like the patriots so the deal struck was a painstaking one.they make a little noise for public relations and in the end it's business as usual for both organizations.

Yep. You got it. I'm calling her "clueless," an adjective borne out by the simple fact that what she allegedly said on Beat the Press was speculation, and nothing more. She is not privy to the details of the contract between Entercom and the Red Sox (since those details are none of her business), so she spent all her jaw-flapping time GUESSING....or, to put it another way, wasting the viewers' time.

OTOH, the FACTS are that there was never a threat by the Red Sox to dump WEEI because of all the stupid, sophomoric or borderline-libelous things said on WEEI over the years. The Patriots never threatened to dump WBCN during all the years that they carried Howard Stern, despite the fact that Stern regularly drew multi-million-dollar fines from the FCC for indecent content.

Last year or maybe the year before, DePetro mentioned how the Sox were doing that Queer Eye for the Straight
Guy promotion. Can't remember if he really tore into them, but he made some kind of offhand comments
like geez, what's the world coming to. Sox didn't mind, apparently.

some of the Sox players didn't like it... here are some quotes:

Mike Timlin (source: Hartford Courant): “I don’t believe in how some people live... When it comes time and you’re standing in front of God, you have to face judgment for what you do. Now if you’re doing something wrong, it is my responsibility as a Christian and a human being to try to guide you away from doing something wrong. All I can do is try to guide you. I can’t lead you.”

Also, John Smoltz’s had this comment about gay marriage: “What’s next? Marrying animals?” It's from this article:

>>Mike Timlin

A key part of Christianity is forgiveness. Mike Timlin, we forgive you for that pitch you threw to Richie
Sexson today which was hit for a game-winning homerun. We could have been 3.5 games up on the Yanks.
Oh well...
While I agree with conservatives on many issues, gay marriage isn't one of them. I have a friend who has been married for over 30 years and he and his wife decided not to have kids...so much for the importance of
marriage being straight-only because only straights can bear kids. Is my friend's marriage any less important than that of a straight couple who have 5 kids, or a gay couple? Then again I know many people are against it due
to their religious convictions, and they're welcome to their opinions.

"2" the Ranting Gryphon, a "furry" comedian, told of how he got an over-talkative Christian woman to clam up.
He was sitting next to her on a plane and she kept asking him what he did for a living--"oh, you're a comedian! Praise God,"...and when he was asked if he was planning to marry anyone, he said, "Yes."

"Oh, Praise God! What's the name of your fiance?"

"Timothy."

That shut her up.

:D :D :D ZING!

At least Sexson had the grace to knock it out of the park. AN INSIDE-THE-PARK HOME RUN!!!??????!!!!! Please!

I lost respect for Timlin after he had those remarks regarding Queer Eye. I wish people would worry about what goes on in their own life and not try to tell others what they should or shouldn't do with theirs.

Timlin not the only atlhlete

Oh let us not forget Carl Everett - here are some quotes:

"Gays being gay is wrong," the deep thinker spouts in Maxim's July issue.

http://www.hour.ca/columns/3dollarbill.aspx?iIDArticle=6476

"Two women can't produce a baby, two men can't produce a baby, so it's not how it's supposed to be. I don't believe in gay marriages. I don't believe in being gay."

Carl, not everyone is going to marry John DePetro...get over it already...

Consider the source though, jesus freaks, and then Carl Everett? there was a reason that he was dubbed "Crazy Carl" after all. By the way I just went to that site, Allen Iverson?......ANTI GAY?.....NOOOOO...... NOT A.I!!!!!!!! thuaglicious A. I?.......SAY IT AINT SO!!

LOl

True about Carl....Nutjob Supreme!!!

"I didn't see dinosaurs so they never existed" LOL

I love his Globe rant as the open to the Whiner Line. His classic line "you're trying to make a man out of monster"

Funny thing is, with that statement, he was sayinig he is a monster to begin with and changing into a man.
