Boston sports radio is interesting

... the NCAA tournament is going on and that's the main topic of conversation on the national networks. On WEEI, they're currently talking about the Patriots' receiver situation. It's March 15... the NFL draft is still a way's off, the season ended over a month ago.

I'm actually not complaining that much since I'm not a big college hoops guy but it just shows how parochial things are here.

as Ted Sarandis would say... WOWWWW!!

They should be talking about BC Basketball Team, But this is not a College Town . This City Only Care's about The Pats and The Sox .

They should be talking about things that matter to their listeners and college sports has always been an afterthought in this town. It's grown some in popularity in the past decade or so but it's still doesn't approach the popularity it enjoys in the South. I was amazed at how things almost shut down in Florida when the Gators play the Seminoles every fall.

Look at how little they talk about the NHL which has declined immensely in popularity. Again, its all about appealing to what fans care about.

Boston Sports radio is interesting, but increasingly filled with transplants from TV or newspapers (Butch Stearns, of Fox 25, the bigggest example) who feel they have to flex their muscles and show their feathers. All too often they come off like the buffoons that they are, trying to exhibit 'how much they know.' Largely, these are people who'd be door greeters at Wal-Mart or sweeping floors at Taco Bell if not for a bit of lucky nepotism that got them where they are. You can see the TV sports guys going wherever their mouth will get them because they see 'old media' dying and they want a lily pad to hop to in case they can't (in Butch's case) morph into a news anchor like all the other Boston TV stations like to do (Wahle, Harding, Lavanchy, et al).

actually, I think some of the guests on the Big Show--Steve Buckley and Tony Maz in particular, are very good. It's the former jocks that make buffoons out of themselves, Smerlas and DeOssie in particular. Steve Nelson's good on the Sunday football show. I'd rather hear a class act like Steve Grogan...

I have mixed feelings about WEEI. They do a good job but I hate the yelling and screaming and juvenile humor on 2-6pm. Cant they find someone better than JT on the overnight, he is a total baffoon.

agreed about JT... not exactly soothing talk for bedtime. We usually listen to LaVeille, anyway. I agree about the screaming on the Big Show and when they spend time talking about what Pete ate for lunch or whatever (I'm even getting tired of the Whiner Line) but when they stick to the sports and don't yell, it's pretty good. As I said, some of those reporters are knowledgeable. In some ways, I wish it was just the reporters and not the hosts, at times. Like the Sunday morning baseball show... where it's Buckley and McAdam... and Mike Addams, so it becomes a clown act and detracts from the show. Why do they need Mike? Buck and McAdam could carry that show.

I still say that they should dump FSR and give Jon Wallach an overnight show.

I'm thankful for XM late at night I either listen to a ball game or High Standards on XM73
