BOSTON STATION SALE HAS RI CONNECTION

Over on the Boston board, some folks there are reacting to news of the sale of WWZN-1510.

Among the members of the new ownership group?......Craig Rapoza. Name sound familiar? It ought to....He holds a minority stake in 990-WALE, whose current slogan ought to be "Silence is Golden"... ;D ;D ;D.

The Rapoza Family Trust is actually Craig Rapoza, as in 25% owner and Vice President of Cumbre/WALE Greenville Craig Rapoza.

Craig Rapoza is listed in the purchase agreement as Vice President of the new company, and 45% owner through the family trust that shares his home address.

So does that mean the resurrection of Jojo Gator & Big John? Remember that month when that station was getting popular? :D

By the way, that's not a slam @ either Jojo nor Big John. I was just having radio flashbacks to the last time anyone seemed to care about 990.

I remember it well! It was maybe 1 1/2 years ago. Music mix ran from Jazz to Frank Zappa's "Catholic Girls" to Donna Summers' 12" 45 rpm "I Feel Love" (long version).

Big John Bina was f###ing incredible! Super drive-time personality, interesting music mix and a radio market seriously in need of both. 990 quickly found a decent groove for itself and just as speedily pulled the plug! I thought I was the only kid who noticed that. WTF???

That station sounded GOOD for about a month & a half! I remember the music being kind of eclectic! I wish I run tape on them but unfortunately their 5,000-watt signal didn't make it into E.P. all that well. BUT, that summer it was the best thing on the air!

That brief time in the summer of '09 served as proof that AM radio still has some life left to it.

The keys now are as they've always been...compelling personalities...a measure of unpredictability...and folks who come off as "real".

For a while there, the "Midday Madness" show was also "must-listen" radio because of that measure of unpredictability....you never quite knew what Jo-Jo and ...I think her name was Diane....had in store.

Somewhere along the way....checks started bouncing, and the fun stopped pretty quick. Was it Rapoza??.....Was it Arpin??....Only God knows for sure....but for whatever reason....the best thing to happen to the 990 frequency in decades had dried up and blown away.

Sad......sad.

I heard them on WNRI a couple of times but that was it. That was this past year. I dunno what happened. D.R.'s right: for a time, 990 was rising like a Phoenix & for those very reasons!

I also remember hearing Steve Bianchi as well as Big John on 990 during that time frame. Yeah..it was fun to hear both getting creative and coloring outside of the lines a bit. Steve now hosts a mid-day "Big-Band" segment on WBLQ (1230). Caught it again when cruising through Westerly. It sounds great. Nice to hear LOCAL radio there again. (Also saw the station's new mobile unit--a Ford Transit. Looks good Chris !)

Steve is also at WOON/1240-Woonsocket. Driving into work I hear him doing the school lunch menus as well as some spots.
