Boston Stations - Syndication

Well first of all, are you sure they are dropping her and not just moving her another time slot? Otherwise, I would think that she was being pulled to another station, as opposed to being dropped. It's my understanding that "Ellen" does pretty well, and was just nominated for some Emmys?
 
'Dropping' may not have been a proper term. How about not renewing.

It's surprising WCVB (Hearst) didn't pick up Ellen since it's a proven success (or somewhat successful). Hearst has Ellen in Baltimore, New Orleans, and Oklahoma City. I imagine a problem would have been for placing it on WMUR, as WZMY has N.H. rights, or maybe they also felt the show was overpriced, esp. for Boston, the largest market for them. NBC owned stations apparently have not.

Tribune doesn't have Ellen in any market elsewhere, but the addition will strengthen CW56. Whereas Megan won't be on the Tribune affiliate in Boston - Megan Mullaly is going to the Tribune station, My17 in Philly, the weakest of the 6 stations, to be probably placed in between a sleaze fest of double runs of Jerry Springer and Maury. Sharon Osbourne's show didn't fit in there, I have doubts about Megan's show will do well on stations like those, and as a whole, nationally.
 
Just saw a promo... WCVB will air 'Ellen' at 9am weekdays to replace 'Starting Over.' I would have to assume WMUR will as well; meaning, WZMY loses it.
 
Ellen is the best thing to happen to daytime talk since Rosie O'Donnell. When you get such a GEM you should do everything in your power to keep it.

Not necessarily. If WZMY's rights in NH are still valid, then no 'Ellen' for WMUR. It depends on the status of the contract. But WMUR does not have to always be in lockstep with WCVB.
 
WMUR Channel 9 just started promoting Ellen for their 9 am time slot stating Tuesday, September 5, 2006 - they promoted this during the 6 pm news broadcast.
 
Ellen's show is fine, but "Live with Regis & Kelly' still fairs better in ratings. In Boston, Rachael Ray will also be up against those 2 shows for the 9am slot.

WCVB has a shot to get Buena Vista to consider WCVB the new home for 'Regis & Kelly', which would have been most desired for the 9am slot.

As it is, Hearst is a closer in relation to Disney, Disney would prefer a stronger morning lineup for WCVB which would help GMA and The View, Hearst has rights in Sacramento, Orlando, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, which would work in their favor. Over 5 years ago, Regis moved from CH.10 to CH.6 (ABC) in Philly, as Disney wanted its own stations to have the program (only exception to that is Chicago b/c of Oprah). Ch.40 in Atlantic City also lost rights, once Today show expanded. The shows do move around station owners, even the ones that have been on for long.

However, WHDH's sister station WSVN Fox 7 in Miami also has rights, the ABC affiliate down is lowsy, giving WHDH leverage to keep 'Regis'
 
Ray's new show will air at 10am on WBZ, followed by a one-day delayed broadcast of Guiding Light.

Hearst-Argyle actually has a deal with NBC to develop and air programming.

at 10, and (contrary to some rumors I've heard)

yes, raytard will be on at 10. t-d'ing gl until 9am the next day is nothing new. cbs13 in portland has been doing it for years.
 
While we're on the subject, isn't it true that Boston is the only market in the whole U.S. to have Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! on a station other than ABC, NBC, or CBS? I know they were both on WHDH for many many years. But for some reason, in September 2001, they both moved over to UPN38. And I know that TV38 is keeping them for when it loses UPN. Was there something wrong with the ratings of them on WHDH? And why couldn't they move them to WCVB or WBZ?

I vote for putting Wheel and Jeopardy on WBZ. It just seems like it would be a much better fit.

But WBZ already has ET and Insider, as do most CBS O&Os. In most the major markets, the ABC affiliate carries Wheel and Jeopardy. Hearst, however, isn't into carrying it. They are into Inside Edition, and basically have kept the show alive. (In NY, for years Inside Ed. was on at 1:30am or some odd time, in Phillly - it's been on WGTW, the current TBN station, but Hearst has continued a near primetime clearance for that show on its stations). WHDH probably chose Extra and Access b/c it was cheaper in cost (like their choice of dropping Ellen).

Well, I know that Heart carries Wheel and Jeopardy in some markets. I believe WMTW-8 in Portland, ME is owned by Hearst, and they carry those 2 shows. And I'm pretty sure WPTZ-5 and WNNE-31 in Vermont are owned by them, and they carry them also. So, if they do, why can't WCVB (and WMUR) carry them, and put Inside Edition at another time? (Possibly 12:30pm). Anyway, I think the only difference in schedule with WCVB and WMUR is that at 7pm, instead of Inside Edition, WMUR has Entertainment Tonight. Why is this?
