Boston TV "DTV Day" (Digital Test) on Tuesday 12/9

A story in today's Herald says on next Tue. there will be a "test" so people can see whether their TV (with rabbit ears/housetop antenna, etc.) is digital ready or not (or whatever)--
from 7 am to 5 pm, those without digital sets/converters/cable or sat. will see regular
programming on Ch 2. Those without will see a program telling them what they can do.
Other stations will do "tests" that day too.

Next Tue is "DTV" day

Don;t you mean those "with" will see regular programming, and those without will see the special?

Sounds like a lesser version of the test we just had in Hartford/New Haven on Wednesday. From 12 to 12:30 PM and from 5 to 5:30 PM, channels 3, 8, 18, 20, 26, 30, 59, 61 and CPTV (Connecticut Public Television) showed color bars, each with their logo in the corner and a scrolling message about digital conversion from CBA, the Connecticut Broadcasters Association.

Fios seems to be ready.

Ch 2 is running regular programming and ch 5 has the GREEN "Your TV is ready" slide on BOTH 5 AND 505!

(If ch 505,the HD feed, showed a RED slide THEN there would be a problem :)

DirecTV's feed of WGBH is analog (Whoops!). All the other stations are the digital feed, though. I wonder why WGBH's signal for DirecTV is analog, though.

Still?? Wow! I remember a few years ago when I had DirecTV there was some slight ghosting on WGBH. I also remember WMUR and WENH had this as well. Do you know if they're digital yet?

I have Comcast cable and it says "This TV is DTV Ready!" in the upper right corner ("DTV" in green) on Ch 2.
Well, tech. the TV isn't but because I have cable, it "is". If I were to cancel cable and use an antenna...
not ready :)

DirectTv gets it's station feeds though fiber optic telephone lines. It matters not that you see what you call an "analog" signal on directTv. You are seeing the same feed they always send directTV and once the station switches it's transmitter ot digital cable and sat signals will not be affected. The digital television switchover only affects folks who receive their TV signals via an antenna on the roof or with rabbit ears and those with cable ot sat are NOT affected in any way by the digital switchover.

Regular 2 or Ch 802?

If regular 2 then it means that Comcast is down converting 2.1,the HD signal where there is a 4:3 version on 2.2

Not usually. Most DirecTV feeds are off-air. If they could not get an acceptable signal from wherever their receive site is, the station usually opts to pay for a fiber or some alternate means of delivery. In fact, in Canton Ohio, we had to insist on DTV carriage. But if they opted for off-air, the cost to convert to DTV falls solely with the provider, be it DirecTV, the cable system, uVerse, etc.
