Boston's Fall Book

Any thoughts on the 12+ numbers?

BZ back to # 1 - let's fix something that isn't broken
Kiss and Jamn' switch chairs
CRB takes a nice jump
Three down quarters for Mix
AAF and BCN both up - AAF by a bunch
FNX - yikes!

Lotsa good reading, but it's just 12+ - now it's time for the number spinners to interpret to their hearts content. Thoughts, anyone?

AM's not showing:

590*, 650, 830, 890*, 950, 980*, 1060, 1120, 1150, 1200*, 1230, 1260, 1300, 1330*, 1360, 1400, 1430*, 1470, 1510, 1550, 1600

FM's not showing:

WPRO*, WEEI*, WHJY*

----------
* = station has shown up on ratings in last couple of years

Looks like the Santa factor didn't drive "classic hits/oldies" listeners over to classic rock. Who got the "tune out the holiday music" boost?

WUNR-AM 1600 HAS appeared in a couple of Arbiitrends lately; since their signal is at least "pretty good" these days, that might have helped. If by 1400, you mean WLLH Lowell & Lawrence, you really can't expect rim-shotters up at the noisy end of the dial to appear. When PPM's with their 6-plus audience start, maybe WMKI will appear. But who gives devices like PPM's to a six-year old?

WBOQ "North Shore 104.9" got a small boost and came in near the bottom, and with a signal that only covers a portion of the market, they often don't make the published list at all. They didn't begin to add some holiday music in with their usual oldies/gold AC mix until within a few weeks of the holidays.

Not surprising, WEEI-FM doesn't come in well from about Dorchester northward. It does come in fairly well on the South Shore and Cape. WPRO and WHJY don't come in consistently in the northern parts of the market, either.

It's not the six year old holding the PPM, it's the parent. But it's also the parent listening to WMKI because the kid in the back seat demanded it be on the radio. I've seen that happen to several of my friends who have 4-6 year olds.

Besides, they parents give their kids cellphones, how is a PPM much different? BTW, I don't necessarily think a PPM or a cellphone is a good thing to give to a six year old, but I'm just pointing out the phenomena.

I did have the opportunity to see the fall book via Tapscan.

I thought I had read a couple of years ago that Arbitron was going to start including Non-comms in the "released ratings".

Check out Tapscan and see why I ask the question!

They have in the markets that have gone to PPM, so I guess whenever they switch to PPM for Boston, they will include the Boston non-comm ratings.

The 12+ ratings for Arbitron subscribing non-comms are released for public view at http://www.rrconline.org. Click on "Arbitron Data" at the top of the homepage. They just posted the 12+ Boston Fall '08 subscribing non-comms within the past couple of days.

Does any one have the 25-54 rankings?

and is WJMN STILL ahead of WODS in 25-54?

Wait...that really happened? And we have only one station that exclusively plays black music why?

Hip Hop is just one form of black expression. There's also gospel, reggae, soul, jazz, adult R&B, none of which you will ever hear on Jammin.

In fact, I'd go as far to say that Jammin's success is because it plays hip hop for the suburbs, not the black community.

PPM people meter measurements for the Boston market are supposedly starting now in January. All (I imagine all anyway) Boston area stations were approached by Arbitron to set up PPM signals in each station's signal to be 'heard' by the meters. (WJIB has not signed up).

That's true...but the fact remains that 25-54's would rather hear hip hop than burnt out 70's hits. Yet no Boston station owner other than Clear Channel tries to lure them in.

That's the problem. with Jammin hip hop is ALL THEY PLAY!

This is why an urban AC or Rhytmic AC or Urban/rhymic AC is NEEDED!

It's not needed, there's not enough listeners to support it or it would have been tried already.

What burnt out 70's hits? Are you referring to Oldies 103?

Surely you aren't referring to urban AC. Because anyone familiar with Urban AC would know it encompasses alot: soul from the 70s, plus 80s & 90's R&B hits. Gospel on Sundays. Black oriented newscasts. Talk shows like Monique and Michael Baisden. Plus lots of current artists that do not get exposure on hip hop stations, like Heather Headley, Robin Thicke, Eric Benet, Mary Mary, and Anthony Hamilton.

Wrong.

What would make sense is for Urban AC to be on a full time AM signal.
