I take it you were not either a teenage girl or gay man during that time, because for us, the great pop music explosion of 1997-2001 (peaking in 1998-1999) was like heaven for us! Yes, a lot of it was cheesy manufactured bugglegum pop, but we loved every minute of it -- just like how a previous generation of pop music fans went weak in the knees at the sight of Elvis, the Beatles, and all the other gorgeous musical idols that burst onto the scene in the late '50s and early '60s.
Unfortunately, after 9/11/2001, pop music seemed to fizzle out just as quickly as Disco did two decades earlier... in 2002, a few foreign boy-bands like A1, Westlife, and BBMak still tried to release new material, but it went nowhere fast, and all the U.S. boy-bands had either disbanded or decided to "take a break to work on solo projects". And that makes it all the more amazing that the Backstreet Boys have actually managed to pull off a successful comeback, even though "Incomplete" is definitely not the strongest 'power ballad' they've ever recorded.
Now I'm just patiently waiting for some other group to have the guts to follow BSB's lead, especially since they are all getting rather old to be in a "boy-band" (the oldest member of BSB is 34!), so surely there is room for a new group featuring fresh faces and fresh voices to make its debut. Heck, why not assembled the New Kids On The Block II? Hopefully this time, though, the gay members will actually be out of the closet.
