Lets go over what we have learned.
Someone is slamming consultants.. which he or she is slamming Hilton.
Dave is great at recommending toilet paper. I have to give Dave props, I have used toilet paper at his house and it was soft and plentiful. If someone wants to be successful with a CHR, Dave is someone I would listen to. He never had a book as a PD in Altoona when his station was under a 10 share. That was going head to head with the Frog.
Let's be realistic about the situation. The guys are doing the best they can with a family owned station. No big bucks to buy an audience with promotions.
Remember when the Frog came on, they gave away thousands and thousands of daughters. They used that technique to attack the long time country station that used a truck load of groceries as the ratings grand prize.
I would bet 50 cents that if someone went Country in Altoona or State College, had the promotion budget to get people interested in sampling the product, the Frog would go down.
Even if you take 5 points away, The Frog isn't #1, and the 5 points puts you in the top 5-6.
Think about it. The plan might have legs.
Does that make me a consultant too?
Wait, if I become a consultant, that means people will rip on me for being a has been or a wash out.
I would rather be doing part-time in Milwaukee or Virginia Beach, my last and current part-time job, than dealing with the crap here.
Who other than Glen Turner, Dave Shannon, Kevin Nelson and Steve Jones could actually work somewhere bigger than State College.
Most of the people on the air now weren't born when I did my first show 25 years ago.
Look at who you are, where you want to be and be realistic.
As Judge Smails said in Caddyshack, the world needs ditch diggers too. More than half of you should be digging ditches and making some decent money, than slamming each other on here.
I will admit I was a firey competitor. When I worked at WPRR, I wanted to beat the Frog. When I was at Mix, I wanted to beat WPRR. When I was at WTRN, I wanted to beat Sean McKay. If you don't want to win, ditch digging is where you need to be.
For now, radio is fun for me. It is something I enjoy and I am very happy not to worry about if I will get fired or if someone gets a bug up their butt and change everything you built because they thought Dick Dennis would bring more audience to a station. Seems to me the slide started there.
Hope everyone enjoyed my ranting and raving, but please get your heads out of your butts. It is radio. The music matters. Bribing listeners matters. What you say between songs can matter, but most of the time doesn't.
Good night and have a pleasant tomorrow.
