Boy I miss the good ol' days!

As I sit here and read a story regarding this year's Endfest and how their headliner bailed out to instead play another local show the same night, and how now it will be an acoustic show held in a venue that holds 700 people, I can't help but think back to the good ol' days.

You know the days when the acts were top notch and not the one's that got rich off their overplayed one hit song "What It's Like". The days when you packed up the car for a nice ride over to one of the most scenic venues in the United States. Then after a jam packed day of drinking and great music, you'd pack 10 people in a hotel in Ellensburg just to drink some more and then head back in the morning. It wasn't just a concert, it was a weekend that created memories that will last a lifetime.

Now instead we get an acoustic show that only 700 people will see. In the good ol' days at an Endfest concert, the line to buy a beer was 700 deep. Where's Dr. Emmett Brown's delorean when you need it?

Wow, has the End fallen or what? 700 people in an acoustic setting sounds more like something KMTT would pull off....

Actually the Mountain had quite a successful summer concert at Marymoor Park. You know honestly stuff like this just points to a format flip in the near future. Management can say they are staying the course untiil they turn blue in the face, but that's what you need to say so no one beats you to the punch and takes the format you have in mind.

Man I wish I'm wrong with that prediction because I am an alt fan, but it is just apparent upper management doesn't care about the end in it's current format. How can they when they should of done all that they could do pull off a blockbuster summer concert? How can they when you bring a PD that has only made minor tweaks since he stepped foot in the building? How can they when you have so many jocks with a ton of experience on the beach, but yet you fill your slots with rookies? Are you trying to tell me Dick Rosetti would'nt pull better numbers than Pam Wolf? Bill Reid or Andy Savage better numbers than Harms? DJ No Name better numbers than Jordan Sliver? Granted Harms has been around, but you get my point. I mean c'mon already. Not to mention that Raizin guy that had a decent following in PM drive at the Monkey. Are you trying to tell me he wouldn't pull good numbers at night with his type of show? The all important Fall Book begins weeks from now and you are going to go into battle with the lineup you have?

Like I said I hope I am wrong regarding a format flip, but it just seems inevitable. I remember reading that the first thing the new PD was going to do was to find an afternoon show, yet as you glance at the Entercom career section, there's not even an opening posted.

agreed with the above, hate to say,but you know as well as i,it's spitting in the wind to wish the return of any of those mentioned:(
btw-someone please enlghten me as to this endfest debacle,i see bad religion are playing elcorazon on the day they were to have played endfest.

From what I read their headliner Bad Religion cancelled on them to play another local show. Then for some reason they moved the show from Marymoor to EMP. The station claims it was because they suddenly felt that the 40 dollar ticket charge was unfair to their listeners and decided to change it to a free show. But let's be honest, it was probably because ticket sales were horrible. Are you trying to tell me that if they were anywhere near a sellout, they would suddenly say "Hey let's refund everyone's money and make the show free!" I don't think so.

So know as far as I know the show is next weekend at the EMP Sky Church with a mass capacity of 700 people. Throw in staff, promo interns, and obviously the friends they are going to pull strings for to get in, and it adds up to about 600 listeners that will actually get to see the show. Plus you have to win to get in, so even if you were first in line to buy a ticket to the original show at Marymoor, you are pretty much SOL if you don't win tickets. All in all it is a total debacle for a station that has been in a downward spiral for quite some time.

Wow, has the End fallen or what?

I remember back in spring of 2006 when I got to see the best thing in radio so far.
Was lucky to have an escorted trip with at the time and still is the senior engineer for Entercom Mr. Clay Freinwald.
We went to cougar mountain site and the Tiger mnt sites UNBELIEVABLE. All the millions and millions let me say it one more time millions of dollars worth of equipment in IMMACULATE CONDITION floor clean enough to eat off of...but to my surprise or stupid y everyone transmits from the same place even some dtv stations!

Now to the point. WHY? How much of the pie is there? Isn't community the point or mass market?
I remember knhc tower and transmitter where in the attic and on the roof of an elementary school up the hill aways..

The END has lost the community. They had it with the grung thing now time to move on long ago, hell KRAB had better numbers. ???lol Bring it back to the community. Take a hint from KXEP and make some money.

Just a pet peave 107.7 it grew up and now it's in an old folks home.............
c'mon granpa you comin home with me!!
lol

When the end launched it was one of the most unprofessional moments I had ever heard. Management (that one word probably already proves my point) came to Seattle to do the announcement...and in one of the WORST live reads (did no one think to "pre-tape it??") the whack-whack regional idiot for Noble laments about how piss-poor their service had been with the Magic format. WAS IT NECESSARY TO INDICATE THAT TO THE LISTENING PUBLIC???

So they launched with the End (REM's "end of the world" as first tune) and off it ran.

Perhaps now is time to bring in some regional whack-whack from Entercom to go on with live read and stumble through another soliloquoy about "how piss-poor our service & programming has become...and now we present...MAGIC 108...."

How the End has fallen. I was a part of the excitement when KNDD first flipped in 1991, granted the announcement was lame, but that was a great year when Nirvana and Pearl Jam broke out on the national scene. The 91X San Diego's Kevin Stapleford and Mike Halloran first consulted them, and they were the best to work with. PD Lambert and MD Marco Collins.

Yeah, I miss those good ole days too.

for what it is worth, from someone that has seen the end through a lot of it's ups and downs (wasn't around for the #1 12+ book, but i have heard grand stories), i can say with confidence that the station, after SO much turbulence, is headed in the right direction.

a smart programmer is in place and has begun the process of stripping away all of the nonsense and is preparing to build things back up again. as i am sure most of you know, it doesn't happen overnight. it is a day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year process of getting people in the habit of doing things the right way.

is it easy? no. of course not, years of bad habits and questionable decisions have to be addressed and re-taught, the right way. anyone who has really been paying attention the last month would already be seeing/hearing subtle differences that indicate a radio station that is regaining it's focus and mission. examples range from the dropping of unsuccessful and forced programming like the FU-Line and Radio Impulse to the hiring of local all ages music columnist megan seling from the stranger to host the local show (and highlighting her and the show on the front page of the web-site).

again, it is just the beginning of righting a ship that aside from a 10-12 month period a couple of years ago when it squashed a direct competitor, hasn't been as good as it can be.

as far as endfest in concerned... from what i have read some is true, most is not. what hasn't been pointed out is that the new PD walked into the situation, having been dealt a lousy hand and created a free, unique event as a gift to the listeners. everyone that bought endfest tickets has been invited to the show, plus, =bad religion (who, yes is playing a club show that night but ONLY because the marymoor show had already been cancelled and they were going to play seattle anyway) is playing Endfest Unplugged, and in fact, it is their first live, acoustic performances ever.

these are the sorta things always get glossed over (or not mentioned at all) on this board, because that usually gets in the way of the apparent pleasure frequent posters get in kicking people (or radio stations) when they are down.

alas, i am no better, as this is my first (and hopefully last) post for radio-info. after years of my station (and most others) taking endless abuse, i felt compelled to at least give a status report of what is really going on. please, let the snarky, negative, pessimistic responses begin, it wouldn't be a post on radio-info without them. none of it is personal and it is all in good fun, honestly, one of my favorite things about this board is that most people that post never let facts get in the way of a good story :)

Harms thanks for that post. While I'm not a fan of yours on air, it's quite obvious from the few times I've heard you that you are extremely knowledgable when it comes to the music and are very passionate about the End and its future, and for that you definitely have my respect.

What I don't understand though and you highlighted it in your post, is why the end doesn't shift to more of the classic alt format that was so successful in knocking off KRQI years ago? Instead there seems to be too much focus on new music over the last few years and its simply not working. I know there's people that will disagree with me and say "Well KROQ in LA plays the exact same new music and look how successful they are." But the difference is that they have heritage jocks in almost every daypart and the end has been a revolving door for talent over the years. The new music draws in the younger demo and people like Kevin & Bean and Jed the Fish keep older folks around that grew up listening to those guys. The older demo may not be crazy about the music, but they're not going anywhere because their favorite jocks are on the station.

Which leads me to my next question. Is there going to be an effort to bring on a solid and experienced airstaff? Because like I mentioned above, I don't think you return to the glory days without one. The new PD has only been there for over a month so like you said things take time to address and fix. I look forward to hearing more changes in the coming months and hopefully things head in the right direction. Seattle needs the End and I'd hate to envision the radio dial without it.

I think that would be a smart move sales wise to go after an older demo.

I think they have to. If you look at the successful stations in town (KZOK, KMPS, KISW), the one constant is that they each have solid airstaffs.

Actually an ad posted today looking for a jock. However I did find it weird that the ad said the gig was for a major daypart instead of being more specific. As far as I know the only 2 major dayparts are AM & PM drive and last I checked Adam Carolla was filling morning drive. There's no chance they'd dump his show, would they? I thought out of all dayparts, he was the only one pulling solid numbers? Or has he struggled with the exception of a few good trends?

Lots of comments in this thread, mostly from listeners who have already given up on the End.

Those that were disheartened by the Lazlo era, tune in some time. You'll like what you hear.

There's a lot of great new music out there. While I'm not thrilled with the decision to play the new MIA single on the End, the new singles by Airborne Toxic Event, The Wombats, Oasis, and Snow Patrol are great. I picked up the Airborne and Wombats CDs the other day, and they are the best CDs I've purchased in a few years. Great listens start to finish.

While both the midday and afternoon DJs are just temporary, they are a huge improvement over the Robot and Lazlo. Those of us who tune into a music station for music have found, well, music. Hoorah!

Pam Wolf's Sunday morning show, while no replacement for Keller's legendary show, is great. Some of those acoustic cuts sound great, and Wolf has a nice, easy, relaxed delivery to start your sleep Sunday morning.

It's going to take a lot of time for the End to recover from the 2 years of Lazlo. We're talking about a regime where he fired every single member of the air-staff except two (Harms and Neal Martin, both of whom have much reduced on air roles) and turned the station into a shell of its former self that served solely as a vehicle for his own awful, unpopular, afternoon drive show.

Regarding endfest - I'm suprised the ticket sales were so low. Had I not had to work that day, I would have purchased tickets to the Marymoor show, just to see Airborne Toxic Event and Bad Religion.

I just hope that Entercom gives this station enough of a chance to right itself.

I visit with Keller# yesterday. What I miss still being on the radio still is playing my fave artist Judist Priest & Oasis!!
We spoke fondly of the olden days, and talked of how if you could bottle rap and rock, you would surely make a fortune!!

He come over and borrowed compact disc's to input into his collection,(he tole me he can move his records into the computer) we went and ate(i drove), he had the vegaterian burger and i had the sandwich which is a knock off off the Dennys 'super bird' (yummy!) ;)
;D
